Martinez: 'Mertens in his prime'

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez relished a ‘fantastic’ Coppa Italia game between Napoli and Inter. ‘Dries Mertens is at the prime of his career.’

The semi-final ended 1-1 at the Stadio San Paolo last night, sending the Partenopei through 2-1 on aggregate.

Mertens scored the equaliser, making history with his 122nd goal for the club, a new all-time record.

“It was an incredible match, fantastic,” Martinez told Belgian television RTBF.

Inter forward Romelu Lukaku has scored twice in three Cup games for the Nerazzurri this term, but it’s Mertens’ Napoli who enter the match with an advantage after winning the first leg 1-0 at San Siro.

Martinez: 'Stop criticising Lukaku'

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez complains pundits spend too much time nit-picking with Inter striker Romelu Lukaku. “Nobody would talk about Diego Maradona not using his right foot.”

The coach spoke to The Times newspaper after Lukaku made an impressive start to his Inter career, scoring 23 goals in 35 competitive games.

Martinez: 'Italy Euro 2020 favourites'

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez believes Italy “are among the favourites to win Euro 2020, as Roberto Mancini’s work has been exceptional.”

The Azzurri will have all three group games on home turf at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome against Turkey, Switzerland and Wales.

“Italy are among the favourites to win Euro 2020,” Martinez told the Corriere dello Sport.

They won all 10 qualifiers to make themselves top seeds, just two years after missing out on the 2018 World Cup.

Lukaku 'happy thanks to Inter'

Belgium CT Roberto Martinez claims Romelu Lukaku’s form at Inter is down to his relationship with Antonio Conte and that he feels “more at ease” in Milan.

Lukaku joined Inter from Manchester United over the summer and has scored 10 goals in 14 Serie A games so far this season, and Martinez discussed the club form of his No 9.

“It seems clear to me that there’s a feeling between him and Conte,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “The transfer to the Nerazzurri made him feel more at ease.

Martinez: 'Lukaku no surprise'

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez isn’t surprised by Romelu Lukaku’s start with Inter. “He’s found some strong team-mates and a great coach in Antonio Conte."

Martinez was speaking after the conclusion of the Euro 2020 draw, and was asked about Lukaku, who has scored 11 goals in 17 games in all competitions for the Nerazzurri this season.

“It’s not a surprise, we know him well, it’s beautiful to see him score for Inter the way he does in the national team," said Martinez.

Belgium CT Roberto Martinez has assured Inter fans that they have “a unique No 9 who knows how to do it all” in Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku became Inter’s record signing when he arrived from Manchester United in August and has made an immediate impact, already scoring five Serie A goals.

“He’s a unique No 9, physically strong: I think it’s important for every team to have a striker who harvests all his qualities,” Martinez told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Martinez: 'Lukaku underappreciated'

Inter striker Romelu Lukaku “hasn’t been appreciated in the British game,” argues Belgium Coach Roberto Martinez.

The 26-year-old scored on his Serie A debut in a 4-0 victory over Lecce, having left Manchester United for €65m plus bonuses.

He had been in the Premier League since 2011 at Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton and from 2017 Old Trafford.

“Romelu hasn't been appreciated for most of the time he's been in the British game,” Martinez told the Daily Mail.
