Lippi: 'I'm done coaching'

Former Italy CT and World Cup winner Marcello Lippi has revealed he has coached for the last time. ‘I’m definitely done with coaching’.

Lippi’s has been without a job since he let the position as China CT in November 2019 and leaves a 30-year-long career in the dugout.

He started as the U19 coach at Sampdoria and has memorable spells with Atalanta, Napoli, Inter and Juventus before he became the Azzurri CT in July 2004.

FIFA ranking: Italy climb to 12th

Italy have climbed to 12th in the FIFA ranking after the matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Holland in the UEFA Nations League.

Following the draw against Bosnia at the Artemio Franchi and the win in Amsterdam, Italy have climbed one position in the ranking.

In view of the group draws for the World Cup qualifiers, Italy aim to reach top 10 of the European national teams to be seeded first.

Excluding the non-Italian teams, Italy are currently seventh in the standings.

On this day: Maldini's last World Cup match

On this day in 2002, Paolo Maldini played his last World Cup match against South Korea, setting the record for minutes played after 23 appearances in the competition.

The former Italy international graced the left side in four different World Cups from 1990 to 2002, starting off his track record with Italia ’90, almost two years after having made his debut for the national side.

On this day: Meazza's last goal for Italy

On this day in 1938, Giuseppe Meazza scored his last goal for Italy, taking his tally to 33, only beaten by European Champion Gigi Riva.

The strike was a penalty during the 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over Brazil.

Peppino picked up two World Cup crowns during his time with Italy, in 1934 and 1938, captaining the side in the latter.

The Inter hero made his debut and before turning 20 he had already been crowned Capocannoniere in Serie A twice and scored a brace on his debut for Italy.

Blatter: 'Infantino has become a megalomaniac'

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has criticised the current leader Gianni Infantino: “He wants to make football into a massive money machine.”

The current President Infantino was elected after Blatter’s controversial resignation in 2015 and the former chief, who made the World Cup into one of the most profitable events in sports, claims his compatriot successor was clearing the way to make ‘everything bigger’.

Happy birthday, Daniel Passarella!

Today is the 67th birthday of the great, goalscoring centre-back Daniel Passarella, who starred for both Fiorentina and Inter.

During his four-year stint at Fiorentina, the two-time World Cup winner with Argentina scored a sensational 35 goals in 139 games for the Viola.

That included 15 across all competitions in 1985-86, when he helped the Tuscans qualify for European competition.

His 11 goals in Serie A earned him a move to Inter, four years after coming to Italy from River Plate in 1982, and he went on make 73 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

Azzurri celebrate 110 years

The Italian national team hosted France on this day in 1910, signalling not only their first international fixture but also the start of a historic rivalry.

The side initially represented the Kingdom of Italy, given the country did not become a republic until 1946.

Despite the green, white and red of the Tricolor flag, they would dress in Savoy blue, representing the colour of the royal House of Savoy, which reigned over the kingdom.

De Biasi: 'Intense experience in Albania'

Gianni De Biasi says it was an ‘intense experience’ to coach Albania and reveals he ‘lacked motivation’ after five and a half years.

The former Brescia boss took Albania to Euro 2016, their first ever major tournament, and was fighting with Spain and Italy for a place in the 2018 World Cup.

But he left with four games remaining and wanted to give the new coach an opportunity to get a head start before the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

Deschamps: 'I would adopt Juve model'

France CT Didier Deschamps has revealed he would adopt a similar model to the one used by Juventus if he was coaching in club football.

The World Cup 2018 winner spoke to the French newspaper L’Equipe about the current emergency.

“It’s a very complicated period, families are in mourning, others await news about loved ones who are fighting for their lives,” Deschamps told L’Equipe. “It’s truly terrible and the suffering of all these people makes me sad.

Report: Roma prepare Pedro offer

Roma are reportedly stepping up their interest in Chelsea winger Pedro and have allegedly drafted a deal worth €3m a year plus bonuses for the Spaniard.

The former Barcelona player looks set to leave Chelsea after the current campaign, as the 32-year-old has only appeared nine times in the Premier League under Frank Lampard.

His current deal expires in June and the Corriere dello Sport claims Roma have prepared an offer of €3m a year plus bonuses to tempt the former Spain international with a move to the Eternal City.
