Ventura: ‘No politics with Jorginho’

Italy CT Giampiero Ventura insists he didn’t call-up Jorginho just so he couldn’t play for Brazil - “he’s doing well”.

The Napoli midfielder finally got the nod from the CT when he named his squad for the World Cup play-off with Sweden.

Jorginho has been capped twice already, but both came in friendlies so he’d still be eligible for Brazil.

However, if he plays in either of the two Sweden games then he’ll only be eligible for the Azzurri.

Italy to learn play-off opponents

Italy will learn their World Cup play-off opponents later today, facing one of Sweden, Greece, the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

The Azzurri finished second in Group G, five points behind Spain, meaning they must win a two-legged play-off to reach the World Cup.

Giampiero Ventura’s side are seeded, thanks to their world ranking, so can’t face Switzerland, Denmark or Croatia.

Slovakia were eliminated as the ninth best of the second place sides, so there are only four possible opponents for Italy.

“It must be an obligation,” Parolo said in a Press conference from Coverciano today.

“Our will is to go there, we all really want it. It would be a catastrophe [if we didn’t qualify].
