Inter all-time greatest XI

Treble-winners, legends and record-holders, Richard Hall picks the best all-time XI to have worn the Nerazzurri jersey through history.

GK: Walter Zenga

‘Spiderman’ was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation. Zenga was born in Milan and was an avid Inter fan. He played for the Nerazzurri for 23 years and in that time he won Serie A, the UEFA Cup twice and the Italian Super Cup. His dramatic, showman-like style, is why he so fondly remembered. His agility and incredible leap, meant that he would deny some of the world’s best strikers, entertaining the crowd in the process.

RB: Javier Zanetti

Zanetti celebrates Inter milestone

Javier Zanetti has spoken of his ‘pride’ celebrating 25 years since his official unveiling as an Inter player.

Zanetti was the first signing of the Massimo Moratti era at Inter in the summer of 1995, with the Nerazzurri paying Argentina side Banfield €6.5m for the then-21-year-old right-back.

He went on to become the player with the most appearances in the club’s history (858), winning five Scudetti, four Coppa Italia and the Champions League in 2010.

Zanetti: 'It's more than a shirt'

On this day, five years ago, Inter retired the No4 as a tribute to their former captain Javier Zanetti: “Being part of the history of this club is an honour.”

The right-back’s shirt is no longer available to players at Inter, as it became an eternal symbol of the Argentine hero, who represented the club between 1995 and 2014.

“It’s more than just a shirt. It’s a story of love and life, a family, a second skin, an emotion over time,” Zanetti wrote on Instagram.

Zanetti: 'Lautaro can still give us a lot'

Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti claims Lautaro Martinez ‘can still improve and give us a lot’ and backs Antonio Conte to bring home the Scudetto.

One of the ongoing transfer sagas in Italian football links the Argentine 22-year-old with a move to Barcelona, but Zanetti points out how happy he seems at the Giuseppe Meazza.

“When we bought him, we knew very well how it would develop,” Zanetti told Christian Vieri in an interview on Instagram Live. “We were waiting for this moment.

'Lautaro at Inter for long haul'

Javier Zanetti believes Inter have ‘a striker for the long haul’ in Lautaro Martinez, despite speculation linking him with Barcelona.

Reports linking Martinez with Barca have gone into overdrive during the coronavirus crisis, but Zanetti is confident his fellow Argentine will follow in his footsteps and leave behind a legacy at Inter.

“He’s a very smart lad, he’s making the most of his chance to play in a league as great as the Italian one,” he told Cadena 3.

Zanetti: 'Baggio greater than Ronaldo'

Javier Zanetti reveals the best player he ever worked with at Inter was not Ronaldo, but Roberto Baggio. “He had the ideal balance between quality and passion.”

The Nerazzurri and Argentina legend was interviewed by former teammate Esteban Cambiasso on Instagram Live, so was asked about his greatest companions.

“When Ronaldo arrived from Barcelona, he was just incredible, but if I had to say one name, it’d be Roberto Baggio. He had the ideal balance between quality and passion,” replied Zanetti.

Carbone: 'Left Inter because of Hodgson'

Benny Carbone spills the beans on his time at Inter, blaming Roy Hodgson for “doing damage” to the team, admiring “inhuman” Javier Zanetti and his regret at leaving.

The midfielder lasted only one season at San Siro in 1995-96, before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Bradford, Derby and Middlesbrough.

Ironically for someone who spent so much time in England, he blames an English manager for his decision to leave Inter.

Zanetti: 'Icardi no, Lautaro...'

Javier Zanetti ‘doesn’t think’ Mauro Icardi will return to Inter but assures he ‘sees’ Lautaro Martinez staying at the club.

Icardi seems set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his season-long loan, meaning Inter could again be lumbered with a player who has no place in Antonio Conte’s plans.

“Right now we’re not talking about the transfer market, the most important thing is health,” Zanetti told ESPN.
