Cengiz backed to win Ballon d’Or

A major bookmaker in Italy is offering odds on Roma talent Cengiz Under to win the Ballon d’Or by 2023.

Cengiz’s run of five goals in his last four games has not gone unnoticed in the betting world, with Sisal Matchpoint launching a special of 50/1 for the Turkish attacker to end Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s grip on the award in the next five years.

Unfortunately for Roma and the 20-year-old, his most recent finish could not prevent a 2-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.

Totti: Salah one of world’s best

Francesco Totti has described former Roma teammate Mohamed Salah as “one of the best players in the world”.

Salah left Roma for Liverpool in a deal rising to €50m last summer and has been a revelation for the Reds, scoring 30 goals in just 36 appearances.

“The level he is playing at, at the moment, he is one of the best players in the world – and I think he can and will get even better,” Totti told Liverpool’s official website.

Alisson: Roma too quiet

Alisson insists Roma “can’t collapse like this” and “need to talk more” after they lost 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Roma took the lead through another Cengiz Under goal but must now turn the tie around in two weeks’ time if they are to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, prompting Alisson to suggest his side were lacking “a strong attitude”.

“We did the right things in the first half,” the goalkeeper told Voce Giallorossa.

Donnarumma ‘chooses next club’

Gianluigi Donnarumma has reportedly decided to leave Milan this summer and sign for Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, Donnarumma has accepted the challenge of becoming PSG’s next No 1 after Alphonse Areola and Kevin Trapp failed to hold down the jersey.

The publication explains the French giants had also identified Roma’s Alisson and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak as targets but like the 18-year-old “the most”.

Furthermore, talks would have already been opened between his agent Mino Raiola and PSG.

Roma live down to expectations

It was a painfully familiar tale in Ukraine, as Roma lost control at the first sign of trouble, but Emmet Gates sees hope thanks to Alisson.

Given their performances this season in the Champions League, many believed the days of Roma capitulating with alarming ease in Europe was a thing of the past. Hazy memories of embarrassing score lines and broken players; a club that became the laughing stock around Italy, those embarrassments were thought to be associated with the Luciano Spalletti and Rudi Garcia eras at the club.

Well, the old Roma reappeared once again at the Metalist Stadium. Just to remind us that the mental fragilities that lie just beneath the surface are never truly banished.
