Diamanti returns to Livorno

Serie B side Livorno have announced the return of former Italy attacker Alessandro Diamanti.

Diamanti has signed a contract until the end of the 2018-19 season and joins on the same day as midfielder Davide Agazzi, who arrives from Atalanta.

The 35-year-old shot to prominence with the Amaranto between 2007 and 2009, playing some of the best football of his career as he scored 24 goals in 66 appearances.

Lucarelli: ‘Cassano, come to Livorno’

Livorno Coach Cristiano Lucarelli declares “if Antonio Cassano still has the desire to play, I’m waiting for him with open arms”.

The Italian international hasn’t played in two seasons, but it was reported this week that the 36-year-old is considering a comeback.

Today Livorno returned to work for pre-season, and the Coach was asked about signing a big name in attack.

Livorno: We have Cristiano!

Livorno publicised Cristiano Lucarelli’s appointment as Coach and reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus links by claiming ‘we have the real Cristiano!’

A statement on Livorno’s official website confirmed Lucarelli would coach the club next season, but their Twitter account took a cheekier stance, writing ‘there’s only one Cristiano – and we have him!’

Kane almost joined Livorno

England and Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane was on the verge of joining Livorno in 2013, revealed Marco Amelia.

The goalkeeper spent some time in England at Chelsea and has now retired, but has always been close to Livorno President Aldo Spinelli.

This story had already done the rounds a few years ago via Sky Sport Italia and other sources who remembered the initial approach.

At the time, Kane was a reserve player for Tottenham and sent out on various loan spells to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester City.

Cosenza back in Serie B

Cosenza are back in Serie B after 15 years, joining Padova, Livorno and Lecce in the 2018-19 season.

The Calabrese club beat Siena in the Lega Pro promotion play-offs thanks to a 3-1 result this evening.

They hadn’t been in Italy’s second division since the 2002-03 campaign.

With Crotone relegated from Serie A, it means there will be a Calabria Derby in Serie B next term.

Astori's 2012 message for Morosini

In a moment that now feels tragically prescient, Davide Astori called for games to be suspended after the sudden death of a colleague.

Astori died in his sleep last night in the Fiorentina team hotel while preparing for a Serie A match against Udinese.

The Viola captain was 31 years old and an Italy international.

Medic: 'Players tested regularly'

Napoli chief medic Alfonso De Nicola said Italian football is “at the vanguard” for prevention of sudden death in players, but still couldn’t save Davide Astori.

The Fiorentina and Italy defender was found dead in his hotel room this morning, where the Viola were due to play Udinese this afternoon.

Astori’s body has been taken to the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital for an autopsy.

Diamanti heading to MLS

Alessandro Diamanti will reportedly head to Major League Soccer after talks broke down with Livorno.

The forward and free kick specialist is still only 34 years old, but has been out of contract since his deal with Palermo was terminated by mutual consent in August 2017.

According to Sportitalia, he was in negotiations for a return to Livorno, but couldn’t agree terms with the club currently in Serie C, who he already played for from 2007 to 2009.

Amatrice: 'Juve and Inter did nothing'

The Mayor of earthquake-hit Amatrice has thanked “all of Italian football – except for Juventus and Inter, the only clubs to do nothing.”

The town was devastated by a series of earthquakes in August 2016 and a year on their Mayor, Sergio Pirozzi, spoke at an awards ceremony.

“I thank all of Italian football, that has done so much for us – except for Juventus and Inter, the only clubs to do nothing,” he was quoted as saying by Calciomercato.com.

Serie A: Minute's silence ordered

There will be a minute’s silence before every Serie A and B match this weekend for the victims of flash floods in Livorno.

In all seven have been confirmed dead in the tragedy that struck the Tuscan town last weekend.

Heavy rainfall continues all over Italy, with Orange Alerts put in place for much of Rome today.

It is believed tonight’s Serie A game between Roma and Hellas Verona will go ahead as planned.
