Pirlo: the legend who almost wasn't

As the football world stands to applaud Andrea Pirlo on his retirement, Emmet Gates points out this legend of the sport almost fell through the cracks.

Time waits for no man, not even for one as nonchalantly exquisite as Andrea Pirlo. Following his announcement that he had played his last match as New York FC got eliminated from the MLS play-offs by Columbus Crew, the tributes poured in.

Legends of the game, ranging from Zinedine Zidane and Fabio Cannavaro to Gigi Buffon and Kaka, all posted messages on social media, toasting to a legendary career. European aristocrats, such as Pirlo’s former clubs Juventus and Milan to Bayern Munich, did likewise.

Pirlo: 'Italy must play 4-3-3'

Andrea Pirlo urged Giampiero Ventura to adopt a 4-3-3 formation for Italy’s World Cup play-off against Sweden after a 1-0 defeat.

The second leg is on Monday at San Siro and the Azzurri genuinely risk missing their first World Cup since 1958.

While the Coach shelved his usual 4-2-4 formation for a 3-5-2, there was nothing to impress in Solna and Marco Verratti picked up a ban.

Pirlo: 'Fans treated me like a star'

Andrea Pirlo had been “thinking about retirement for a while” and thanked the New York City FC fans for “treating me like a star when I wasn’t.”

‘Il Maestro’ hung up his boots this week with his final Major League Soccer match.

“I feel positive, as I’d been thinking about my retirement for a while, so it wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. I’d pondered it and I feel good now,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Farewell, Maestro Pirlo

Andrea Pirlo stood out above all others because he never put himself above all others, argues Andrea Tallarita.

You will never understand Andrea Pirlo, the latest of the Italian World Cup winners in 2006 to hang his boots, if you see him as anything but part of a greater whole.

The former Inter, Milan and Juventus midfielder played after an idea of football that was entirely based on being part of a team. He was a director of play, a student of opportunity, someone whose brilliance emerged by extracting the brilliance out of his fellow teammates.

Camoranesi: 'Di Natale better than Pirlo'

Mauro Camoranesi trusts Italy will beat Sweden in the World Cup play-off, but insists Antonio Di Natale was more “technically-gifted” than Andrea Pirlo.

The 2006 World Cup winner spoke to Top Calcio 24 ahead of the clashes in Stockholm on Friday evening and Milan on Monday.

“If the play-offs were a one-off game, then Italy may well have been at risk, but over 180 minutes they will certainly qualify,” said Camoranesi.
