Conte: ‘I spoke to Pirlo’

Italy CT Antonio Conte says he spoke to Andrea Pirlo before opting not to call him for Euro 2016.

The New York City midfielder and his MLS colleague Sebastian Giovinco have both been left out of the squad for this summer’s tournament, almost certainly spelling the end of Pirlo’s international career.

“I spoke to Andrea, I needed to hear from him and we sent people to the US,” Conte explained in a Press conference at Coverciano today.

Conte names Italy squad

Antonio Conte has named his 30-man preliminary Italy squad for Euro 2016, with no place for Sebastian Giovinco or Andrea Pirlo.

The CT will name a 23-man squad for the tournament, so seven will have to be cut from the initial list.

The Azzurri stars will have the chance to prove their worth ahead of the tournament in France, with friendlies against Scotland and Finland.

MLS players Pirlo and Giovinco have not been included in the squad, with Domenico Berardi of Sassuolo also left-out.

“It's true I've improved a lot over the last few years,” Pogba told UEFA’s website.

“I think it's because I'm surrounded by great players who are humble, hard workers who make you work hard too.

Conte ponders post-Marchisio options

Azzurri Coach Antonio Conte needs to choose a replacement for injured Claudio Marchisio amid six available options.

The Juventus midfielder tore his anterior cruciate ligament in yesterday's 4-0 thumping of Palermo and won't be back until October, ruling him out of this summer's Euro 2016.

The Principino was among the top candidates to cover Italy's midfield and his sudden withdrawal opens the race to a variety of midfielders.

Pirlo: 'Satisfied with Italy career'

Andrea Pirlo is at peace with the possibility of not going to Euro 2016 and tips Antonio Conte for success at Chelsea.

The midfielder has won the Scudetto, Champions League and the World Cup, so does it irritate him that he’s never won the European Championship?

“I am happy with what I’ve done in my career. Of course the Euros we lost in Ukraine hurts, but it’d be unjust to say I wasn’t satisfied,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

Yaya could be Inter’s Pirlo

If Roberto Mancini can tie up a deal for Yaya Toure, it may prove to be a fantastic piece of business both in the long and short term, writes Paul Hill.

From the moment Manchester City announced the summer arrival of Pep Guardiola, rumours began circulating about Yaya Toure’s exit. The Ivorian never saw eye to eye with his Catalan mentor whilst in Spain, and the selfish attitude shown by the 33 year-old at The Etihad in recent months goes against everything the future Citizens boss stands for.

The Italy CT will step down after Euro 2016, and appears all-but certain to move to the English side in the summer.

Lampard played 648 games for Chelsea in over a decade with the Blues, and has been sounding-out one of his current teammates about the potential new manager.

“I don't know him too well but he's got a great pedigree, a great recent record with Juventus,” the New York City FC midfielder told BT Sport.
