Undercurrent of unrest in Florence

Fiorentina are challenging near the top of Serie A, but Chloe Beresford detects unrest on the streets of Florence.

After sitting at the top of Serie A for three weeks, Fiorentina faced two consecutive games that would test their credentials as potential title contenders. The first, away to Napoli ended in a 2-1 defeat but when Roma were the visitors at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, hopes were high – especially as Fiorentina had not conceded a league goal at home all season.

Sousa: 'Important victory'

Paulo Sousa was “happy with this important victory” as Fiorentina ended their losing streak away to Verona.

A Rafael Marquez own goal and Nikola Kalinic sealed the 2-0 result at the Stadio Bentegodi.

“We controlled the ball well and could’ve pushed a bit harder, but I am satisfied with the way we dealt with the game,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Sousa: ‘Not concerned by Fiorentina’

Fiorentina Coach Paulo Sousa insists he’s not worried, despite three defeats in a row.

The Viola lost to Roma on Sunday night, adding to defeat to Napoli and a Europa League reverse at home to Lech Poznan.

“Am I worried? I am not,” Sousa told journalists in his Press conference ahead of the Verona match.

“I’m seeing individual and collective quality in the lads which gives me confidence. We need to have the desire to win, and I’m sure if we do that we’ll be consistent to the end.

Sousa: 'Viola dominated'

Paulo Sousa notes Fiorentina “took the initiative throughout,” but were not as clinical in their finishing as Roma.

The Viola lost 2-1 on home turf and with it the status of Serie A leaders.

“Some decisions were not the best and we have to improve on certain incidents, but we took the initiative throughout,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Sousa: 'Fiorentina tempo slow'

Paulo Sousa blamed Fiorentina’s “slow tempo” for the 2-1 Europa League home defeat to Lech Poznan.

The hosts dominated the game, but were beaten by the only two real shots on target.

“We played with a slow tempo because our opponents today sat so deep with two very tight lines,” Sousa told Sky Sport Italia.

Sousa names Fiorentina squad

Paulo Sousa has named his Fiorentina squad to face Lech Poznan, with Borja Valero left out.

The Viola play Roma on Sunday, and despite the Coach’s insistence that minds were focused on the Europa League, it appears the Spaniard has been rested.

Milan Badelj is also left out of the squad for tonight’s match, but Giuseppe Rossi is included and is expected to start up-front.

Agent: ‘Gilberto ready to return’

Gilberto is “ready to return” to the Fiorentina squad, according to the full-back’s agent.

The Brazilian hasn’t featured for the Viola since going off injured after 15 minutes of the 4-1 win over Inter last month, but is now ready to make his comeback.

“Gilberto is ready to return to the squad,” Angelo Arquilla informed Firenze Viola.

“Medically he has recovered, and either tomorrow or Friday he’ll return to working with the rest of his teammates.
