Switzerland international's body found

Tragically, divers have recovered the body of Young Boys and Swiss women’s team player Florijana Ismaili from Lake Como.

She had been on a rented boat with a friend on Saturday afternoon when diving in for a swim only around 100m from shore, but never resurfaced.

After days of searches, which had to use a robot to reach the depths of the lake, her body was found today.

She was 24 years old.

Swiss women's player missing in lake

Young Boys captain and women’s Switzerland international Florijana Ismaili is still missing after she went swimming in Lake Como.

The 24-year-old player was with friends on a hired boat when she jumped in for a swim on Saturday, but did not come back out.

While initial reports only had a Swiss tourist missing, it was confirmed by police and Young Boys that it was Ismaili.

An intensive search of the lake today found no leads and the authorities will send in underwater robots tomorrow.

Bertolini: 'Make women's game professional'

Coach Milena Bertolini feels they cannot progress until her players are recognised professional athletes, but “we got Italy passionate about women’s football and that is the real success of this World Cup.”

Azzurre can't keep up with Holland

Italy capitulated to Holland and their own exhaustion, but Andrea Tallarita believes this Women’s World Cup opened up a new era.

And so it happened: the fatigue conundrum, which had been dogging the Azzurre from at least their third game in the Women's World Cup , finally caught up with them. Against a Dutch team with higher firepower but lower fortifications, the Italians held their own honourably for one half of the game, and then succumbed to the team that was able to keep the highest pace for the longest stretch of time.

WWC: Italy head out to Netherlands

Italy’s adventure in the Women’s World Cup came to an end with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to two Netherlands headers.

The Azzurre brought Aurora Galli into the starting XI after her goal in the Round of 16 against China, but Italy were once again the underdogs against the reigning European Champions. Curiously, the game took place 19 years to the day since Italy beat Holland on penalties in the Euro 2000 semi-final, complete with Francesco Totti Panenka spot-kick.

Zambrotta: 'Italy back to the top'

Gianluca Zambrotta believes between senior, U21 and U20 teams, “Italy are on the right track to being one of the best football nations in the world again.”

The Azzurri have a 100 per cent record so far in Euro 2020 qualifying, scoring 11 goals and conceding none, including Saturday’s 3-0 victory away to Greece.

Italy also reached the semi-final of the U20 World Cup, which will be played on Tuesday against Ukraine, and are among the favourites to win the European Under-21 Championship.

Azzurre play true Italian football

The debut victory against Australia in the Women's World Cup was a classic example of Italian football in action, writes Andrea Tallarita.

Maybe football really does come down to culture and tradition. France, Germany, Spain and now Italy all knocked down their opposing representatives from other continents, honouring reputations that go back almost a century. Of these European platoons, though, it was undoubtedly the Azzurre who were faced with the toughest task.
