OFFICIAL: Women's Serie A turns pro

Women’s Serie A will turn professional from the 2022-23 season, while Juventus have been awarded this year’s Scudetto.

The 19-20 edition of Serie A Femminile was abruptly ended on June 8 and Juve seemed set to miss out on the title, despite being nine points clear at the top.

However, it was decided at today’s Federal Council that the Bianconeri would be crowned Scudetto winners for the third successive season.

Women's Serie B player dies

Women’s football in Italy is in mourning as Riozzese player Arianna Varone has died at the age of just 21.

Varone tragically lost her life in a road accident while she was riding her scooter last night.

“She will leave an unbridgeable void in the lives of those who loved her and were lucky enough to be around her. Goodbye, Arianna,” the FIGC wrote in her memory.

The 21-year-old was a midfielder who began her career with Inter and had a stint with arch-rivals Milan before signing for Riozzese in 2017.

Gravina: 'No show without the fans'

FIGC chief Gabriele Gravina has called games without fans ‘half a spectacle’ but hinted that Juventus will be awarded the women’s Scudetto.

The Italian campaign restarted with the Coppa Italia final four, which Napoli won on penalties at an empty Olimpico in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I have to say that without the fans, it was half a spectacle,” Gravina told La Stampa.

“Stadia will reopen once we are definitively protected from this virus thanks to a vaccine.”

Women's Serie A ends early

The 2019-20 edition of Women’s Serie A has been terminated with immediate effect and without title winners.

It had been speculated that today’s Federal Council would allow for a playoff/playout hypothesis.

However, leaders of Itaian football instead opted for a complete closure of the season, with the table frozen.

Juventus were top with 44 points when the campaign was suspended on March 9, with Fiorentina and Milan nine points behind and Roma fourth on 34.

Women's Euros postponed to 2022

After Euro 2020 and the Copa America, the Women’s Euro 2021 tournament has been postponed by a year to July 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UEFA announced today that the European Championships will be hosted in England from July 6 to 31, 2022.

It had been due to kick off in July 2021, so that it will not clash with the postponed Euro 2020.

The same venues will still be used for these fixtures.

Youth team divisions terminated

While plans are taking shape for Serie A to resume soon, the Italian Federation has officially terminated various youth and women’s leagues for this season.

The coronavirus pandemic is continuing, and although Serie A is tipped for a return at the end of May, the same cannot be guaranteed for lower tier competitions.

The FIGC therefore announced this evening that the 2019-20 season is over for several different youth and women’s tournaments.
