The Roman Tragedy

This early season is turning into an authentic tragedy for Roma, which Andrea Tallarita breaks down act by act.

Something is rotten in the state of Roma: a tragedy in three acts.

Act One. What is rotten in the state of Roma?

Edin Dzeko isn't working: that's a plain and simple fact, and one which, in hindsight, should have been easier to predict. Last season, the Bosnian's Champions League heroics overshadowed his very real dips in Serie A form, but the truth is that his goal tally from the 2016-17 campaign almost halved.

Training retreat for Roma

Roma have reportedly put their team into a training retreat for the next week to prepare for crucial games against Frosinone and Lazio.

This is also a punitive decision following their embarrassing 2-0 defeat to strugglers Bologna this afternoon.

President James Pallotta told RomaPress.eu that he was “disgusted” by the performance.

Pallotta: 'I am disgusted'

Roma President James Pallotta had a brief but telling comment after a 2-0 defeat to Bologna. “I am disgusted.”

The Giallorossi’s dismal campaign continued today with a surprising loss at the Stadio Dall’Ara, against a side that hadn’t scored a single goal until now.

RomaPress contacted Pallotta to ask for his thoughts on the match and the team during this period.

“I am disgusted,” was the only response.

Pressure mounts on Di Francesco

Roma President James Pallotta is said to be increasingly unhappy with the start to the season, putting Coach Eusebio Di Francesco under pressure.

The Giallorossi blew a 2-0 lead at home to Chievo yesterday, and have won only once in their first four Serie A games.

According to today’s Gazzetta dello Sport, there is no immediate cause for alarm but Di Francesco will be kept “under observation” for the next round of matches: Real Madrid, Bologna, Frosinone and Lazio.

Roma strengthen by selling

Roma fans blame the business philosophy for poor results, but Andrea Tallarita claims they're literally improving the team by selling the best players.

For Roma, the story of the weekend wasn't so much that they drew against a side that hasn't won a single game this season, but that they did so in the silence of a half-empty Stadio Olimpico. The fans are deeply disillusioned, and the poor results (five points in four games) are not enough to account for the sullen faces.

‘Roma don’t need to replace Strootman’

Roma President James Pallotta insists the club do not need to replace Kevin Strootman as he closes in on a move to Olympique Marseille.

Strootman’s reunion with Rudi Garcia will see Roma pocket €28m including bonuses and the midfielder sign a five-year contract worth €4.5m per season.

UEFA reduce Roma ban on appeal

Roma director general Mauro Baldissoni confirmed “UEFA have reduced the ban on appeal” so fans can attend their first Champions League away match.

The Giallorossi were originally fined €50,000 after the clashes outside Anfield ahead of their semi-final defeat to Liverpool.

They were also barred from selling tickets to fans for their first away fixture, with another ban as a suspended sentence.

Pallotta: 'What is ADL smoking?'

Roma President Jim Pallotta asked what Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis “is smoking” after claims Liverpool owned the Giallorossi.

De Laurentiis made the outlandish suggestion in an interview with the Corriere dello Sport newspaper this morning.

“I always had the doubt in my mind that the real owner of Liverpool is the same that owns Roma. A little bird told me that a few years ago,” said De Laurentiis.

ADL: 'Liverpool own Roma!'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis sensationally implied “the real owner of Roma also owns Liverpool,” but the Giallorossi hit back.

The claim was made in the Corriere dello Sport newspaper and essentially accused Roma President James Pallotta and Liverpool patrons Fenway Sports Group of circumventing the rules on ownership.

“I always had the doubt in my mind that the real owner of Liverpool is the same that owns Roma. A little bird told me that a few years ago,” said De Laurentiis.

Ferrero attacks Lotito & Pallotta

Sampdoria owner Massimo Ferrero claims ‘Claudio is Lotito’s biggest enemy’ and asks ‘who knew James Pallotta before Roma?’

Ferrero took aim at his fellow Serie A Presidents in an interview with Corriere dello Sport on Friday, while branding himself ‘normal’, despite his eccentric character.

“Lotito is No 1, the best, with an intelligence and culture that’s above average, although not as much as mine,” the film producer told Corriere dello Sport.
