Official: Roma suspend DS Petrachi

Roma have now officially suspended director of sport Gianluca Petrachi, with CEO Guido Fienga temporarily taking over transfer negotiations.

There had been reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia, but the news was confirmed with a formal statement by the club.

Report: Roma 'suspend' director Petrachi

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Roma have ‘suspended’ director of sport Gianluca Petrachi, a step towards his dismissal, as Morgan De Sanctis and Franco Baldini take control.

Over the last few days, there had been growing tension between Petrachi and President Jim Pallotta, with reports of a furious telephone argument and threats of legal action.

Petrachi was poached from Torino just under a year ago, but the situation never ran particularly smoothly.

Tacopina: 'Pallotta lacks Roma passion'

Former Roma vice-president and current Honorary President of Venezia Joe Tacopina blasted James Pallotta. ‘You need to dedicate time and passion to Roma, I hope he sells the club.’

Tacopina was part of the board of directors who originally took over Roma from Rosella Sensi back in 2011 and he left in 2014 for a new experience at Bologna, eventually leading Venezia from 2015.

Friedkin annoyed with Pallotta?

Dan Friedkin is reportedly unhappy with James Pallotta’s comments about his group’s failed takeover of Roma.

Pallotta called out Friedkin for making ‘a semi-concrete offer that just wasn’t close to being acceptable’ in an interview published on Roma’s official website.

However, he invited the businessman to come back with a better offer than his opening gambit of €575m, revised down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pallotta: 'Friedkin offer unacceptable'

James Pallotta asserts Dan Friedkin’s offer to buy Roma was ‘unacceptable’, arguing ‘I haven’t taken one penny out. I have put in more than was expected’.

Pallotta gave an interview to Roma’s official website on Monday, where he was asked how the coronavirus pandemic had affected his club.

“First of all, it’s had a significant financial impact on all of football – and on Roma, certainly,” he began.

FT: Roma 'dismayed' at Pallotta snub

The Financial Times newspaper claims the Friedkin Group’s Roma takeover bid has collapsed and ‘several people within the club were dismayed with James Pallotta’ rejecting €575m.

The negotiations were at such an advanced stage that the club had released a statement confirming exclusive talks, but the deal was never finalised.

It was partly due to the coronavirus pandemic that the talks slowed down, then Friedkin revised his original €750m proposal to €575m, which was reportedly rejected by Pallotta on May 28.

Pallotta: 'Delighted with Fonseca'

Roma President James Pallotta says he ‘could not be happier with Paulo Fonseca’ as the coach celebrates a year in charge of the Giallorossi.

Fonseca arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer after a season during which he led the Ukrainians to a third domestic double and Roma were troubled by turbulence on and off the field.

Although he has struggled to mount a Scudetto challenge this term, he has won praise for his overall approach and Pallotta believes his club will be ‘very lucky’ if he stays long enough to leave a legacy.
