The good, the bad and a wish for 2021

Giancarlo Rinaldi revisits the good and bad things we witnessed in Italian football in 2020 and reveals his hopes for the New Year.

Hopefully we will never have another year like 2020. It has thrown all kinds of adversity at us over its eventful 12 months and yet - somehow or another - even in the midst of a global pandemic the football show went on in a series of odd instalments.

It is not easy to draw any conclusions over such a disjointed time for Calcio but here we go anyway with a slapdash summary of the good and bad things we witnessed in Italian football.

Paolo Rossi will rest in World Cup urn

Italy legend Paolo Rossi will forever be remembered with the World Cup in his hands and now he’ll rest forever inside an urn shaped like the World Cup.

The striker died from a long illness at the age of 64 on December 9.

Following the funeral in his adopted town of Vicenza, there was today another ceremony in his home of Prato.

Wife Federica and their two daughters were in attendance, along with the son he had from his first marriage and his brother Rossano.

Jorginho agent 'won't rule out return to Italy'

Jorginho’s agent assures he is ‘very happy at Chelsea, but wouldn’t rule out a return to Italy in future.’

The midfielder was born in Brazil, but spent his entire career in Italy and chose to represent the Azzurri at international level.

“Jorge is a Chelsea player and he is very happy there, but I wouldn’t rule out a return to Italy in future,” agent Joao Santos told Radio Kiss Kiss.

He is regularly linked with a move to Juventus, but also a potential return to Napoli.

Zaniolo: 'Roma lack nothing'

Roma forward Nicolò Zaniolo claimed the Giallorossi can fight for the Scudetto this term. ‘We lack nothing’.

Zaniolo returns to Trigoria with special knee protection

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Nicolò Zaniolo will resume training in Trigoria in the coming days using a special plastic protection to shield his injured knee.

The Italian midfielder picked up two different knee injuries in 2020.

The first one was in January 12, during a Serie A clash between Roma and Juventus.

The second one was on September 7, in a Nations League match between Italy and The Netherlands.

Mancini: ‘Juve and Inter on the same level’

Italy CT Roberto Mancini believes ‘Juventus and Inter are on the same level’ and praises Ciro Immobile: ‘He is scoring incredible goals.’

Mancini commented on the Scudetto race during a press conference held by the FIGC on Monday.

“It’s a nice championship, with many teams within a few points. Juventus remain very strong, Milan are doing very well, Napoli are having a good season and the same is true of Roma,” Mancini said.

Del Piero and De Rossi started coaching course

Christian Vieri, Alessandro Del Piero and Daniele De Rossi are among the former players who started their path to become coaches today, attending the online course for the UEFA A licence.

The UEFA A licence course – that allows you to train up to Serie C – is being held online due to the pandemic and is reserved for professionals with long experience in the game.

Thus, the list naturally included a host of former players, ranging from World Cup winners to European Championship runners-ups with Italy.
