Rossi’s son: ‘I made him a promise’

Paolo Rossi’s son Alessandro has said the Italy legend left peacefully: 'We were all with him, he left surrounded by his loved ones.'

The 1982 World Cup winner died on Wednesday aged 64.

“He was fantastic father, very simple, humble, as you have known him,” his son Alessandro told reporters in Siena, in front of the hospital where Rossi died.

“He was fantastic in private life. He never said no to anyone, he was always available to help others. His greatest quality was altruism.”

Capello gets emotional about Paolo Rossi

Fabio Capello tried to hold back his tears as he paid tribute to Paolo Rossi on Sky Sport: ‘Have fun with Diego, I’ll make you run when I’ll join you.’

The 1982 Italy World Cup here died on Wednesday, aged 64. Capello was a senior Juventus player when Rossi was a young, promising striker of the Bianconeri and coached the Primavera team of Milan when the former attacker joined the Diavoli in 1985.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has published a letter written by Roberto Baggio for Paolo Rossi: ‘I wanted to be like you, you made the dream of millions of Italians came true, something that I couldn’t accomplish.’

The 1982 Italy World Cup winner died on Wednesday aged 64.

“My awakening, another beating. A great cornerstone of Italian football leaves us. Paolo, PABLITO, PAOLO ROSSI,” Baggio wrote in an heartbreaking letter published by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Rossi dead: all the messages

Fans, teammates and friends of Paolo Rossi remember the Italy legend and Ballon d’Or winner, who died at the age of 64 last night.

Paolo Rossi has died

RAI report that 1982 World Cup winner, Italy legend and Ballon d'Or winner Paolo Rossi has died at the age of 64.

The news was announced by RAI Sport presenter Enrico Varriale, as Rossi had been working with RAI as a pundit in recent years.

“Such terribly sad news: Paolo Rossi has left us,” wrote Varriale.

“Unforgettable Pablito, who made all of us fall in love in that summer of 1982 and who was a precious and competent work colleague in RAI over recent years.

“RIP dear Paolo.”

U21 Euros: Italy drawn with Spain

Italy have been placed in the same group as Spain, Slovenia and the Czech Republic in the U21 European Championship.

The tournament will be held from March 24 to June 6 and the draw was made in Nyon this afternoon.

It’s the toughest possible outcome for the Azzurrini, as both Italy and Spain hold the record with five victories in this competition.
