Controversy over Serie B calendar

Damiano Tommasi and Gabriele Gravina have slammed the FIGC for allowing the Serie B fixtures to be drawn with 19 teams.

The division is supposed to have 22 teams, but Avellino, Bari and Cesena were unable to register for the new season.

Rather than allow relegated clubs or those from Serie C to apply to join Serie B, it was instead decided that the second division would proceed with 19 teams, with one team getting a rest day each week.

Serie B fixtures drawn

The fixtures have finally been drawn for Serie B 2018-19, which will have only 19 teams this season.

Avellino, Cesena and Bari have all failed to register for the new season, and the Lega Serie B has opted not to replace them.

That led to legal challenges and recriminations, with the drawing of today’s fixtures delayed by over an hour.

The FIGC finally gave the go-ahead to draw the fixtures though, with an odd number of teams meaning there will be one side given a rest day every week.

Serie B calendar not drawn yet

The Serie B calendar still hasn’t been drawn, amid talk of legal action from the broadcaster which will show the league.

It was confirmed last week that the division would begin with 19 teams instead of 22, after Bari, Cesena and Avellino failed to register.

The new fixtures were due to be drawn at 19.00 local time in Milan, but one hour on there has still been no draw.

Coppa: Pavoletti sees off Palermo

Leonardo Pavoletti gave Cagliari the edge in a very entertaining Coppa Italia clash with Palermo, setting up a tie against Chievo.

The Sardegna Arena crowd was given a show on a balmy August evening in the Third Round encounter.

There were numerous chances for both sides, but Pavoletti broke through when redirecting a deflected Luca Cigarini strike.

Serie B outfit Palermo got back on level terms from the penalty spot with Ilija Nestorovski.

Zamparini has no Palermo hope

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini doubts they’ll be allowed into Serie A after winning an appeal against Frosinone. “They’re taking us for a ride.”

The fall-out from the controversial promotion play-off final on June 16 continues, as yesterday the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) ruled that the FIGC’s June 27 punishment of a €25,000 fine and two games played behind closed doors was “insufficient.”

Official: Serie B with 19 clubs

The fixture list for the 2018-19 Serie B season will be drawn up on Monday for 19 clubs after controversy and delays.

The Lega Serie B announced the calendar will be presented in Milan on Monday evening and will have 19 clubs involved rather than the usual 22.

Their statement also noted that the Lega Serie B “reserves the right to take action against all those who have or will behave in illegal, illegitimate and prejudicial actions towards the Lega or any of the associated clubs.”

Serie B: Only 19 teams?

Serie B could go ahead with only 19 teams this season, with still no fixture list drawn up.

The fixtures were supposed to have been released on July 31, but appeals and counter-claims have left Serie B in disarray, just two weeks before its scheduled opening day.

Consequently, the 19 clubs who have already registered to play in Serie B 2018-19 have asked for the competition to proceed, even with three teams short.

Serie A new boys Parma have had their five-point deduction revoked, while Emanuele Calaio’s ban has been reduced to four months.

Parma were initially hit with a five-point penalty for the 2018-19 campaign, with Calaio suspended for two years after he was found to have ‘elicited a reduced effort’ from two of his former Spezia teammates on the final day of last term in Serie B.

Avellino denied Serie B entry

The Regional Administrative Court has reportedly rejected Avellino’s appeal, so they won’t be in Serie B next season.

The Irpini were denied entry by the Lega Serie B after failing to provide financial guarantees, and an appeal was thrown out by the FIGC and CONI.

That left the Tribunale Amministrativo Regionale [TAR] as the last recourse, but Sky Italia is reporting that the appeal has again been rejected.
