Cittadella player accidentally kills staff member

Serie B side Cittadella are in shock after midfielder Christian D’Urso was investigated for vehicular manslaughter in the death of a staff member.

According to Il Gazzettino newspaper, the incident occurred on April 23, but 77-year-old Lino Simonetto died in hospital after six days.

It is reported that 23-year-old midfielder D’Urso was at the wheel when his car struck Simonetto’s bicycle close to the training ground.

Following Simonetto’s death, the next step is for D’Urso to be investigated for vehicular manslaughter.

Coppa Italia too far from FA Cup ideal

Lega Serie D President Cosimo Sibilia says the Coppa Italia format change is missing the point. ‘In other countries the amateurs host the big clubs.’

The decision to restrict the Coppa Italia to just the 20 Serie A and 20 Serie B teams from the 2021-22 season was met with utter consternation.

Coppa Italia for Serie A and B only

The Coppa Italia format will change again from next season, with only 40 clubs participating, all of them from Serie A and Serie B.

The tournament had been open to Serie C and even Serie D teams from the earliest stages.

However, a meeting in the Lega this afternoon reportedly opted for adjustments to make the games more ‘appetising’ for television rights and viewers.

According to Calcio e Finanza, the 20 Serie A and 20 Serie B clubs will participate, starting from August 15.

Serie B player given 10-match ban for racism

Pisa striker Michele Marconi has received a 10-match Serie B ban for using a racist phrase against Chievo player Joel Obi.

The incident occurred during their 2-2 match on December 22.

Marconi had originally been cleared after the first hearing in March.

However, new evidence came to light before the appeal and their response was to find him guilty.

Marconi has been given a 10-match ban, but it will take a few days before the judges explain what changed in their judgment.

Lecce captain reveals cancer surgery

Lecce captain Marco Mancosu is battling for promotion from Serie B, but reveals he had surgery on March 26 to remove a tumour.

The 32-year-old forward had been at Lecce since 2016 and scored eight Serie B goals this season, along with nine assists.

He has two brothers who are also professional football players, Matteo in Serie B with Virtus Entella and Marcello for lower level Ghilarza Calcio.

Originally, the club had announced that Mancosu had an emergency appendectomy, but the player himself revealed via an Instagram post that this was a lie.

Official: Empoli return to Serie A

Empoli secured a 4-0 win over Cosenza and the Tuscan side are officially back in Serie A after two seasons.

The three points over Cosenza on Tuesday means Empoli have secured promotion with two games left to play in Serie B, having dominated the championship.

The Azzurri are out of reach for Monza, Salernitana and Lecce, and thus return to the top flight after only two years in Serie B.

Tonali set for permanent move to Milan

Milan have reportedly decided to keep Sandro Tonali and are ready to complete a permanent transfer from Brescia this summer.

Technical director Paolo Maldini believes the young Italian will be one of the protagonists at Milan in the future and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the club is ready to trigger the option to sign the midfielder.

Tonali arrived on a paid loan last summer worth €10m for Brescia and Milan must add another €25m to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent deal.
