Godin impressed by Inter

Diego Godin doesn’t want anyone to underestimate Inter’s Europa League win away to Ludogorets. “They’ve been the champions of Bulgaria for several years.”

The stalemate was finally shattered on 70 minutes by Christian Eriksen’s strike, then a Romelu Lukaku penalty in stoppages sealed the precious 2-0 away win.

This was the first leg in the Europa League Round of 32, so a clean sheet and two away goals are to be considered very positive.

Inter eye Belgian duo

Inter are eyeing up Belgian duo Dries Mertens and Jan Vertonghen on free transfers this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The Nerazzurri have been linked with a move for Mertens for several months.

The Napoli striker’s contract expires at the end of the season, and talks have been on-going with the Partenopei over a renewal.

Calciomercato.com states that contacts have been initiated between Inter and Mertens’ entourage over a deal, with the club willing to pay the 32-year-old the wages he’s seeking from Napoli.

Three, it's the magic number

The three-man defence has become the cornerstone of Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi’s careers and Scudetto challenge, writes Martin Mork.

The back three isn’t an unusual phenomenon in Italian football, but this weekend it will be on display in a direct clash between two of the finest tacticians in Serie A. When Antonio Conte travels to Rome for his second meeting with Simone Inzaghi this term, the two sides are likely to start with the same cards in hand and whoever finds the first Joker might take a big leap towards the Scudetto.

Godin: 'Need to remain 120% focused'

Inter defender Diego Godin says they can win the Derby della Madonnina as long as they remain “120% focused, mentally and physically.”

The derby kicks off tonight, and Godin, speaking to Rai Sport, says being focused is optimal.

“It will be a crucial game in the first place for what it means for the fans of the derby,” said Godin to Rai.

“There will be three points to obtain which are fundamental to the league and for the meaning the fixture has.

Conte can't complain now

Antonio Conte can no longer complain at a lack of options, argues Emmet Gates, as Inter are giving the moaning coach everything he asks for.

“We are talking about players who, apart from Diego Godin, have never won anything. Who do we turn to? Nicolò Barella, who has come from Cagliari? Or Stefano Sensi, who came from Sassuolo?”

These are perhaps Antonio Conte’s most infamous words of the season. Bellowed in the aftermath of Inter’s 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in November, it was Conte at his crabbiest: bemoaning a lack of alternatives in his squad.

Barca and Man City want Bastoni

Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni was targeted by both Barcelona and Manchester City, claim reports, in an exchange with Joao Cancelo.

The 20-year-old centre-back came up through the Atalanta youth academy and has been impressive at San Siro this season, even pushing Diego Godin on to the bench in recent weeks.

His performances did not go unnoticed outside Italy’s borders, as Mundo Deportivo suggest Barcelona made an offer for Bastoni, but it was rejected outright.

Darmian to Inter if Godin leaves

Inter are said to be interested in Parma’s Matteo Darmian if Diego Godin is to leave the club, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Godin only signed for the Nerazzurri last summer, but there are reports that the Uruguayan is keen to return to Spain, where he played for 12 years with Villarreal and then Atletico Madrid.

The defender’s entourage has been quick to deny reports of a departure, but Inter’s general manager Beppe Marotta is believed to be preparing for a potential exit regardless.
