Only in Serie A: Mourinho's handcuffs

Jose Mourinho may be renowned for his turn of phrase, but a particular gesture at Inter arguably spoke louder than any soundbite...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

Inter’s 2009-10 campaign will go down as the greatest in the club’s history, but it wasn’t without controversy. Indeed, there was a point in the season when Jose Mourinho threatened to derail it with his crusade against referees. Throughout his career, the Tottenham Hotspur boss has regularly adopted a siege mentality as a way to fire up his troops in battle. Nowhere more so was that evident than on the blue side of San Siro, where he dared to pick a fight with the FIGC.

Only in Serie A: The winner nobody wanted

When substitute Tuta scored the winner for Venezia against Bari in January 1999, he was perplexed to find both sets of players furious with him.

Words: Martin Mork

Brazilian forward Moacir Bastos Tuta, fresh even for the Venezia faithful, emerged from the scrum to make a name for himself in the mistiest of penalty areas at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo. He nodded a free-kick home in the dying seconds and came out of the scrimmage thumping his chest whilst he ran to celebrate the 2-1 win with the home fans – on his own.

Capello: 'Milan sicken me'

Fabio Capello is ‘sickened’ by Milan’s treatment of Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini and ‘doesn’t like’ Giorgio Chiellini writing an autobiography.

Capello began his interview with Corriere dello Sport by maintaining Juventus won the 2005 and 2006 Scudetti ‘on the pitch’ after they were stripped as a result of the Calciopoli scandal.

“[Luciano] Moggi and [Antonio] Giraudo were great directors, we won [the two Scudetti] on the pitch,” he told the newspaper.

Ronaldo: 'Inter, Juve and missed Ballon d'Or'

Ronaldo names the four players – three of them Italian – who should’ve won the Ballon d’Or, goes back over the Inter showdowns with Juventus and refereeing ‘mistakes.’

Il Fenomeno spoke to Del Piero in an Instagram live chat about his Serie A career and the infamous Mark Iuliano challenge in that match against Juventus in April 1998.

“I can understand mistakes and referee can get it wrong too,” said Ronaldo of the denied penalty and later eruption of the Calciopoli scandal in 2006.

Minister reacts to 'new Calciopoli' claims

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora hit out at “unacceptable” suggestions some clubs were favoured by Serie A postponements due to the Coronavirus outbreak, as Inter ultras complain of “a new Calciopoli.”

There were five Serie A fixtures this weekend that were meant to be played behind closed doors, as they are in the regions most affected by the infectious respiratory disease.

Zeman: 'Juve penalties were fair'

Juventus have an unexpected ally in the penalty row with Fiorentina, their old enemy Zdenek Zeman. “Both spot-kicks can be given.”

Viola President Rocco Commisso remains furious at the 3-0 defeat in Turin, particularly the second penalty awarded for Federico Ceccherini’s challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur.

Former Lazio and Roma coach Zeman was famously one of the first to openly claim Juve were favoured by referees before the Calciopoli scandal broke in 2006.

Juve in fresh Calciopoli appeal

Juventus have launched a fresh appeal to have the 2005-06 Scudetto stripped from Inter just days before the Derby d’Italia.

Juve had the title revoked due to their role in the 2006 Calciopoli scandal, before it was given to Inter.

The Bianconeri have tried and failed in years gone by to at least deprive the Nerazzurri of that season’s crown.

However, it was confirmed on Monday that the Old Lady had presented a new appeal to the CONI’s Collegio di Garanzia dello Sport tribunal.

Lippi: 'Moggi the best director'

Marcello Lippi caused controversy when stating the best director he ever worked with was disgraced Juventus man Luciano Moggi.

The World Cup winning tactician spoke to Tuttosport about several subjects and was asked who the most competent director he had ever worked with was.

“How can I not say Luciano Moggi? Aside from the errors he may have made, he has an infinite knowledge of football,” replied Lippi.

“After that, naturally I’d say Antonio Giraudo and Adriano Galliani, another figure with such great qualities.”

Juventus lose Calciopoli appeal

Juventus have lost their appeal to have the 2005-06 Serie A title revoked from Inter after the Calciopoli scandal.

The Bianconeri had two titles revoked in the scandal in the summer of 2006, but as the first was in 2004-05 and left unassigned, the 2005-06 edition was instead given to Inter.

The Nerazzurri finished third that year behind Juve and Milan, but were the highest-rated club after points were docked for the scandal of trying to influence or pressure the choice of referees.

Juventus in new Calciopoli appeal

Juventus have officially lodged yet another appeal to have the 2005-06 Serie A title removed from Inter.

In the Calciopoli scandal of 2006, the Bianconeri had two Scudetti revoked – the 2004-05 edition went unassigned, while the 2005-06 title was handed to third-place Inter.

That is because Milan, who had finished second, were also docked points in the trial, along with Lazio, Fiorentina, Reggina and Arezzo.

Juventus have had several different appeals to have the titles returned, or at least the later trophy taken away from their rivals Inter.
