VAR 'lacks clear protocols'

Retired referee Paolo Casarin and former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio claim VAR is being misused because there are “no clear protocols.”

The technology has caused a great deal of controversy, most recently with several incidents on Wednesday night, infuriating Napoli, Roma and Genoa.

“The referees have the power to make decisions, they have to use VAR, it’s an instrument that is there to help them,” Tavecchio told Radio Punto Nuovo.

Vieira: 'Italy ignorant on racism'

Patrick Vieira blasted Italian society, clubs and players like Leonardo Bonucci for being “ignorant” when it comes to racism. “Nothing has changed since my day.”

The debate over how to deal with racism in stadiums hit the headlines again last week with the ugly scenes from Lazio ultras in the Coppa Italia semi-final with Milan.

Despite repeated warnings read over the speaker system, play was never halted by the prefect in charge of security – as in Italy, the referee is not given the authority to suspend a game for racist abuse.

'Conte wants Italy return'

Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio has revealed that Antonio Conte ‘wants to get back to coaching in Italy’. 

Conte is expected to find a new club for next season, having spent the past campaign battling Chelsea for compensation, and Tavecchio all-but-confirmed Serie A was the Coach’s next port of call.

“Conte wants to get back to coaching in Italy,” he told Gr Parlamento.

Tavecchio: 'Here to encourage Italy'

Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio is back at San Siro “to encourage Italy” against Portugal and sniped at Giampiero Ventura.

Tavecchio had hired Ventura for the Italy job and was in charge when the Azzurri lost the 2018 World Cup play-off at San Siro in November 2017.

Tavecchio: ‘Amazed by Ventura’

Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio is “amazed” Giampiero Ventura has left Chievo already, and discusses Italy’s World Cup failure one year on.

The CT was in charge a year ago today when the Azzurri drew with Sweden to lose the play-off, and today his contract with the Flying Donkeys was terminated by mutual termination.

“The day of the apocalypse,” Tavecchio recalled on RMC Sport.

Report: Moratti rejects FIGC role

Former Inter patron Massimo Moratti has reportedly turned down the chance to become FIGC President.

The businessman was put forward by several other club Presidents, most notably Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli.

However, according to Sportmediaset and La Repubblica, Moratti decided not to stand for election as head of the Italian Football Federation.

Now Gabriele Gravina – President of the Lega Pro/Serie C – is the only candidate.

Official: Gravina to be FIGC candidate

Gabriele Gravina has officially confirmed his candidacy for the Presidency of the FIGC.

The 65-year-old has officially put his name forward for the election on October 22, with the Italian FA operating under a commissionership since Carlo Tavecchio’s resignation in November.

Elections in January failed to return a President, who must achieve at least 75 per cent of the vote, which is split between seven groups.

‘Expert’ Tavecchio defends record

Carlo Tavecchio has leapt to the defence of his record as FIGC President. “I’m a football expert.”

Tavecchio stepped down from the FIGC after Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, which marked their first no-show for 60 years, but the 75-year-old made it clear he had still plenty to offer.

“I hope those supported by the majority will work to find a credible President,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

‘Juventus players against Insigne’

Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio appears to claim Juventus players stopped Lorenzo Insigne playing in Italy’s World Cup play-off against Sweden.

The Napoli star didn’t come off the bench in the second leg, with Daniele De Rossi seen angrily telling Giampiero Ventura to sub him on.

There have since been claims that the Bianconeri core of the squad didn’t want Insigne to play.
