Abete: ‘FIFA must clarify’

Former FIGC President Giancarlo Abete says it’s “difficult” to imagine Michel Platini was involved in corruption.

The UEFA President has been suspended by FIFA’s ethics committee for 90 days, after revelations that he received a payment from Sepp Blatter described as “disloyal” by the Swiss attorney general.

Abete hopeful of Monday outcome

Giancarlo Abete is hopeful that the Italian Football Federation can find a new President today.

All bodies of football on the peninsula are voting on Monday to determine the new leader of Calcio, with Carlo Tavecchio thought to be the clear favourite.

Defending the indefensible

FIGC presidential candidate Carlo Tavecchio’s racist gaffe and subsequent denials highlight a worrying side of Italian football, as Luca Persico reports.

“We say that any old Opti Pobà can come here, before he was eating bananas, now he’s playing in the Lazio first XI.”

The more you read it, the worse it gets. Carlo Tavecchio’s analogy to describe the supposed flooding of non-EU players into Italian football could not have been more ill-conceived.

‘Collina for FIGC President!’

Marcello Nicchi believes that former Serie A referee Pierluigi Collina has the credentials to stand for the role of FIGC President.

The Italian Football Federation are in line to shortly decide on a successor to Giancarlo Abete, with the choice seen as primarily between leading candidate and current President of the National Amateur League Carlo Tavecchio, and resigning FIGC Vice-President Demetrio Albertini.

However, for one of the deciding parties in the matter, head of the Referees’ Association, one former match official should be considered.
