Only in Serie A: Cataclysmic Catania

Although not strictly Serie A, Livio Caferoglu remembers when Catania were the catalyst for a series of events in the summer of 2003 that would change Italian football forever...

It was April 12, 2003 and Serie B was on the home stretch. Catania were 16th, in the thick of a relegation battle, and were hosting a Siena side just two points off the top. The match finished 1-1, which did neither team any favours, but there was a problem. Siena had fielded an ineligible player in defender Luigi Martinelli, who was still serving a ban. What should’ve been a simple overturning of the result morphed into mayhem.

Serie A Seasons: Venezia 1998-99

Venezia were bottom and seemingly resigned to relegation until Alvaro Recoba came in and orchestrated one of Serie A’s greatest escapes...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

Venezia’s 1998-99 campaign was truly remarkable for several reasons. Remarkably, Maurizio Zamparini resisted making a managerial change for an entire season, sticking with Walter Novellino throughout. More remarkably, the Arancioneroverdi achieved their highest post-war finish in Serie A, despite being bottom at Christmas. Most remarkably of all, it was single-handedly orchestrated by Alvaro Recoba.

Serie B has first coronavirus case

Serie B has its first case of coronavirus after Venezia midfielder Antonio Junior Vacca tested positive.

Venezia added in their statement Vacca was observing a period of self-isolation but also that his condition was improving, with the 29-year-old no longer showing symptoms.

“In the coming days, the club will endeavour to put in place the necessary measures to check the health of other first-team members and employees,” it continued.

Football Italia calcio quiz - Serie A 2001-02

Think you know your Capocannoniere from your catenaccio? Test your Serie A knowledge with Football Italia’s calcio quiz, 2001-02 edition!

Another bout of last round drama was in store for the 2001-02 season as three teams went into the final day with a chance of claiming the Scudetto. Juventus eventually came out on top, beating champions Roma and Inter to the trophy, the Old Lady’s first title since 1997-98.

But Chievo were arguably the story of the season, as the Flying Donkeys took Serie A by storm. They led the table for six rounds before falling away – but still claimed a creditable fifth place in their debut Serie A campaign.

Azzurri visit flooded Venice

A delegation representing the Italy squad paid a visit to Venice as it deals with historic levels of flooding. "The city will recover, like an injured player."

Chief delegate Gianluca Vialli, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma all visited the iconic St Mark's Square, that has been under water for last several days due to extreme flooding.

The city has come to a standstill, with shops and schools closed for consecutive days. The water is slowly subsiding, although new floods are expected when the tide rises.

Coppa: Gervinho brace boosts Parma

Gervinho bagged a brace as Parma got their Coppa Italia off to a great start, beating Venezia 3-1 at the Stadio Tardini.

The result sends them through to the Fourth Round, where they will face Frosinone or Monopoli.

Gervinho started the 2019-20 campaign as he ended the last, on target and running defenders ragged, as within nine minutes he had drilled in the opener.

The Ivorian veteran had several more chances before Simone Iacoponi rose to nod in a corner kick.

D'Aversa: 'Parma right Coppa attitude'

Roberto D’Aversa is confident Parma will not underestimate today’s Coppa Italia opponents Venezia. “We want to face every match the same way.”

Serie A teams are starting their Coppa campaign in the Third Round and Genoa already beat Imolese 4-1 last night.

“We are only missing Marcello Gazzola and Juraj Kucka, otherwise it’s a full squad for this first competitive game of the season,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
