Ref protests banned during COVID-19 crisis

The protocol for Serie A matches during the COVID-19 pandemic is being finalised, including rules on catering, media, placing substitutes in the stands and banning protests to the referee.

Although the medical protocol for group training was agreed this week, a more complex version still has to be set in stone for games to be played from June 13 or 20.

According to the draft printed in Il Tempo newspaper, it is 36 pages long and covers every conceivable detail.

Naturally, mascots and handshakes are banned, so is the group photograph before kick-off.

Serie A staggered kick-offs?

Serie A matches should hopefully resume by June 13 or 20, but it’s reported there will be three different kick-off times throughout the day, including three midweek rounds.

There are still 124 games to be played if the 2019-20 season is to reach its natural conclusion and the agreement of a medical protocol for group training was the most significant step forward.

A final decision will be made on May 28 as to if and when the Serie A fixtures start up again.

Coaches’ Association President Renzo Ulivieri is confident Serie A will resume, but ‘June 20 is more realistic than June 13.’

The medical protocol for group training was finally agreed this week and another meeting on May 28 will decide if and when the games will take place.

“I get the feeling Serie A can finally get back on track, as we received encouraging signs on that score,” Ulivieri told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Cairo: 'Serie A June 13 or 20'

Torino President Urbano Cairo believes the Serie A season will resume ‘on either June 13 or 20,’ but is concerned at how it’ll affect 2020-21 and condemns the play-offs idea.

The Government, Lega Serie A and FIGC finally agreed on a medical protocol for group training, so on May 28 should set the date for games to resume.

Bielsa up for Fiorentina or Verona?

There are some reports Marcelo Bielsa wants to leave Leeds United for a Serie A experience at Fiorentina or Hellas Verona.

L’Arena newspaper, which is based in Verona, cites ‘South American sources’ with the story of a potential switch to Italy, but only if Leeds don’t get promoted to the Premier League.

There could be a merry-go-round on the benches, because Verona’s current coach is Ivan Juric, who has been linked with Fiorentina and West Ham United.

Strakosha: 'Lazio believe in Scudetto'

Thomas Strakosha has claimed coach Simone Inzaghi ‘changed the mentality’ at Lazio, who have ‘started to believe’ in winning the Scudetto.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has been an ever-present in Serie A for the Biancocelesti this season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process, but reveals he has struggled with an injury of late.

“I have a small problem, but I’m on my way back,” Strakosha told Lazio’s official channels. “The situation has improved and now we are only waiting for the date of the resumption.

Lippi: 'Sarri can start from Inter'

Former Italy CT Marcello Lippi expects a ‘great battle’ for the Scudetto but claims Maurizio Sarri’s tactics ‘will be useful’ for Juventus after the forced break.

Juventus sit one point above second-placed Lazio in the League and Lippi claims the champions were about to show their true selves after an initial ‘learning period’ under Sarri.

“He has the play, alright,” Lippi told Tuttosport. “When the season stopped, the learning period was about to end.

Lazio will let fans make their presence felt

Lazio have announced they will allow their fans to have a presence at the Stadio Olimpico when Serie A games resume – by putting their photographs on seats.

The league has been locked down since March 10, but the medical protocol for group training was finally agreed this week.

It’s believed this should allow fixtures to start up again from June 13-20, but naturally they’ll be behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Official: Giroud extends with Chelsea

Lazio and Inter transfer target Olivier Giroud has officially extended his Chelsea contract until June 2021. ‘I am delighted to continue my journey at Chelsea.’

The striker was going to be a free agent this summer and had been on the verge of a move to Inter in January, but it was abandoned because other deals did not go through.

Antonio Conte had been hoping for a reunion next season at San Siro, while Lazio were also known to be making a play for the 33-year-old.

Acerbi: 'No marking is impossible!'

Francesco Acerbi has warned that banning defenders from marking opponents tightly is ‘unthinkable’ and rubbished ‘fake news’ of player unrest at Lazio.

The issue of man-to-marking in Serie A matches once the season resumes is proving contentious, given it contravenes social distancing.

However, Acerbi made it clear that as much as Calcio had changed because of coronavirus, ‘the games won’t be table football’.
