Roma’s victory fails to hide identity crisis

Despite having secured back-to-back wins in Serie A, Steve Mitchell believes Roma still face an identity crisis.

The Giallorossi started a run of seven matches in just over three weeks with a 5-2 win at the Stadio Olimpico against newly-promoted Benevento on Sunday evening.

Kumbulla: 'Dzeko is our captain'

Marash Kumbulla said the Friedkins have ‘made a good impression’ at Roma and believes captain Edin Dzeko will ‘do well’ on Sunday against Benevento.

Dzeko ready to extend with Roma?

After being on the verge of a transfer to Juventus, Edin Dzeko is now said to be negotiating a contract extension at Roma.

The 34-year-old has been in the Capital since 2015 and only signed a new deal in August 2019, following weeks of negotiations with Inter.

That situation repeated itself this summer, with Juve seemingly striking a deal with both player and club, but that fell apart when his replacement Arkadiusz Milik failed to agree an exit from Napoli.

Fonseca: 'Not satisfied with Roma result'

Paulo Fonseca was ‘not satisfied with the result, but Roma had a good game’ in their 2-2 draw with 10-man Juventus and explained his lack of changes.

The Giallorossi had twice taken the lead through Jordan Veretout and wasted the chances to put themselves beyond reach, especially with Edin Dzeko hitting the post and Adrien Rabiot’s red card.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s towering header secured a 2-2 draw for Juve at the Stadio Olimpico.

Dzeko better off staying at Roma

Perhaps it’s time Edin Dzeko accepts his fate is to remain at Roma and Lee Bushe believes it’s a better outcome for all concerned.

One lesson that footballers tend to learn the hard way is that the grass isn’t necessarily always greener on the other side. Take Alexis Sanchez, for example. In January 2018, he left Arsenal - where he was the star of the show and one of the Premier League’s best players - for Manchester United, where his stock dramatically decreased. Sanchez, now at Inter, spoke recently of how he regretted leaving Arsenal as soon as he started training at Carrington.

Dzeko remained a substitute at Verona as he was on the verge of joining Juve, but the striker is now staying put after the move fell through and the Bianconeri re-signed Alvaro Morata instead.

Roma CEO Guido Fienga has assured that Paulo Fonseca’s job is safe, distancing the club from Max Allegri.
