Stankovic: Inter thrive under Leo

Veteran midfielder Dejan Stankovic feels Inter are beginning to thrive under the management of Leonardo.

Saturday's 1-0 win at home to Cagliari was their ninth in 11 League games this year.

The Nerazzurri remain five points behind Milan in third place.

"It's normal to be tired. January and February are devastating, but now comes the good bit and the upcoming games like the one against Bayern Munich mean there is no tiredness. It'll be forgotten," Stankovic said.

Leonardo 'did not expect' a struggle

Leonardo admits he “honestly did not expect” such a hard slog to get the better of Cagliari this evening.

“We scored the goal early on and I got the feeling we'd control the game, but we risked conceding at the end and really struggled to close down Cagliari, who have many quality players,” he said of the 1-0 victory.

“We are tired, but I don't want that to be an alibi. We've got to wipe the idea of fatigue out of our minds, as there's still a marathon ahead of us.

Leo isn't thinking about Milan

Inter boss Leonardo insists he isn't thinking about former club Milan even though they are closing in on the League leaders.

Last night Adriano Galliani made light of the fact Inter have won eight of their last 10 games in Serie A by telling reporters that they are still only two points closer to Milan than at Christmas.

Inter currently lie five points adrift of Milan and hope to make up more ground when they face Cagliari tomorrow.

Leo rejects claims Inter are 'dead'

Leonardo has rejected claims that Inter's title challenge is "dead" after Sunday's defeat to Juventus in the Derby d'Italia.

Inter lost 1-0 but arguably should have equalised in the 89th minute when Samuel Eto'o hit the bar from just a few yards out.

Speaking ahead of Inter's midweek clash with Fiorentina, Leonardo said: "The game in Turin was balanced. Criticising Eto'o is out of this world. I won't make a drama out of it.

Leonardo: 'This changes nothing'

Leonardo insists tonight's defeat “changes nothing” for Inter's ambitions. “We were just a little too slow.”

Juventus earned the 1-0 victory thanks to a first half Alessandro Matri goal, but Samuel Eto'o missed a glorious opportunity in the final minute.

“We struggled to create chances in the first half. Juve played very well, remained united and it was difficult to break through their lines,” said the Coach.

Leonardo: 'Juve-Inter to be a battle'

Leonardo's first Derby d'Italia is “part of a long history and rivalry. When there's a battle, Inter can be counted on, but I'm bored of Calciopoli.”

Sunday night sees the two arch rivals come face to face, so talk of the Calciopoli scandal and fate of the 2004-05 and 2005-06 titles has been on the front pages again.

“I think anything I could say about Juventus-Inter has already been said,” noted the Brazilian.

Inter playing against history

Inter and Leonardo will have to clear more than one historical hurdle if they are to be crowned Italian champions again. Antonio Labbate remembers 1971.

"The changing room rebelled against Heriberto Herrera," says Roberto Boninsegna. "With all due respect, he wasn't a Coach – he was a physical trainer. He used to tell us that we only needed to understand 20 per cent of what he was saying to win games. The problem was getting to that 20 per cent…"

Let Inter entertain you

The appointment of Leonardo has transformed Inter into a must-see Serie A attraction, writes Giancarlo Rinaldi

Ask anyone who ever got married and they will tell you that making a wedding speech is one of the most tense and nerve-wracking occasions imaginable. Only once the long-dreaded formality is out of the way, can you finally kick back, relax and let your hair down. And there is something about Inter at the moment which resembles a groom, best man or father-of-the-bride who is cutting loose at last.

Leonardo: 'Keep this enthusiasm!'

Leonardo expects the title race to be “a battle right to the end,” but won't criticise Inter's defending after an eight-goal thriller.

The reigning champions propelled themselves into third place with a game in hand after a spectacular 5-3 victory over Roma.

“Are we the anti-Milan? This Serie A campaign will be a battle right to the end with many teams close together,” insisted the Coach.

Leonardo: 'Inter-Roma is intense!'

Leonardo expects tomorrow night's Inter-Roma to be “as intense as always and can give important signals for this season.”

The Coach was won all but one of his matches in charge since replacing Rafa Benitez and climbed up to third place with a game in hand.

“The confrontation between Inter and Roma is a tradition now with so many recent examples at the highest level. It will be a great match, as intense as always and can give important signals for this season.
