'Milan-Lazio should've been suspended'

Leonardo believes Milan-Lazio should have been suspended for racist chanting and warns authorities that his club ‘demand respect and justice’.

Franck Kessie and Tiemoue Bakayoko were racially abused by sections of Lazio support during Wednesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final at San Siro, but – not for the first time this season – the game was not stopped.

“Let’s start with two premises,” the sporting director told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Leo & Maldini meet Gattuso?

Leonardo and Paolo Maldini reportedly met Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso after their Coppa Italia exit to Lazio last night.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the Milan directors held talks with their former teammate at the club’s training ground on Thursday morning.

The Rossoneri lost 1-0 at home to Lazio in the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final, leaving the Coach’s position at risk.

Maldini: Gattuso right for Milan

Paolo Maldini insists Gennaro Gattuso is the right Coach to take Milan back into the Champions League. “We’ve never doubted him.”

Milan face Lazio on Saturday in the first of a double-header between the Champions League chasers this month, and Maldini was asked for his thoughts on the clash.

“Lazio are doing well, they have quality and, like us, are playing to qualify for the Champions League,” he told Sport Mediaset.

Gattuso: 'Milan mistakes were costly'

Gennaro Gattuso shrugged off questions about the referee, insisting Milan had “the best performance of 2019 and lost not because Juventus did well, but because of our mistakes.”

The Rossoneri had the better of the first half and took the lead through Krzysztof Piatek, but a Paulo Dybala penalty and Moise Kean strike turned it around for 2-1.

Leonardo: 'Clear refereeing errors'

Milan director Leonardo claims their defeat to Juventus was decided by “very clear refereeing errors and the general behaviour of the referee was inadequate.”

Krzysztof Piatek had put the Rossoneri ahead during a very impressive first half performance, but a Paulo Dybala penalty and Moise Kean goal turned it around.

Arsenal Coach Unai Emery is the latest candidate for the Milan bench next season, as Gennaro Gattuso is increasingly at odds with the club.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, tension between director Leonardo and Coach Gattuso could see a change at the end of the season, even if they qualify for the Champions League.

Options to replace him mentioned already are Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, Arsene Wenger and Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Milan fly out for Everton?

Milan sporting director Leonardo has reportedly flown to Brazil for talks with Gremio over a deal for winger Everton Soares.

According to Fox Sports Brasil, Leonardo will use the trip to drive down Gremio’s asking price of €80m – which is Everton’s release clause.

The broadcaster explains the Brazilian side are prepared to sell the 23-year-old but only once their participation in the Copa Libertadores is over.

Leonardo: 'Gattuso not a priority'

Milan director Leonardo said they never considered sacking Gennaro Gattuso, but also that “two months is an eternity in football. His future is not a priority.”

The Brazilian spoke to the media after a 1-0 defeat to Sampdoria, their second consecutive Serie A loss.

“We have to be mature and deal with this moment, overcome it and achieve our objective of Champions League qualification,” Leonardo told Sky Sport Italia.

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s howler after 33 seconds gifted Gregoire Defrel the only goal of the game and referee Daniele Orsato viewed the stoppage-time incident on VAR, deciding Nicola Murru got his studs to the ball before Krzysztof Piatek.

“This was not our best performance, let’s put it that way,” the director told DAZN.
