Diamanti and Ledesma to start?

It looks likely that Italy boss Cesare Prandelli will start with Alessandro Diamanti and Cristian Ledesma against Romania in Klagenfurt tomorrow night.

The pair featured in Prandelli's 'preferred XI' in Italy's final training session at Coverciano before they catch a flight to Austria later this afternoon.

Prandelli experimented with a 4-3-1-2 formation whereby Diamanti took up a position in the hole behind Mario Balotelli and Giuseppe Rossi up front.

Incidentally, Balotelli will wear the No 10 shirt.

Prandelli: 'I won't abandon Cassano'

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli believes Antonio Cassano must be helped and says that he doesn't intend to abandon the troubled Sampdoria star.

The Italian FA officially started arbitration proceedings to cancel Cassano's contract today for "insubordination and gross misconduct" at Sampdoria's request.

Sampdoria President Riccardo Garrone will not forgive the 28-year-old following a training ground bust-up in October and is more than prepared to lose an asset worth £10m on a matter of principle.

"I don't feel like an Oriundo," he said. "I feel Italian and it's for this reason that I am happy. Actually I am overjoyed to be called up to the Italy squad.

Marchisio out of Romania tie

Claudio Marchisio has left Italy's training base after he was ruled out of Wednesday's friendly against Romania.

The Juventus ace, who was replaced in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Roma, is struggling with a muscle problem in his right leg.

Former Under-21 international Marchisio underwent medical tests in Florence earlier today which illustrated a slight problem.

Although the issue is not thought to be very serious, Italy boss Cesare Prandelli doesn't want to run any risks.

Prandelli says no to Cassano

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has admitted that Mario Balotelli, Alessandro Diamanti and Alberto Aquilani could be named in his next squad – but Antonio Cassano won't.

The Azzurri play Romania in an international friendly next week and the new Coach will announce his 23 on Sunday.

"I said that I wouldn't call up players who behaved poorly or who comported themselves violently," Prandelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"When a player has been placed outside of a squad, he can't be selected for the national team.

Lopez hoping in Italy call

Argentine-born Catania ace Maxi Lopez has again intimated that he wants an international future with Italy.

The striker noted last April that he would be willing to represent the Azzurri after failing to win full honours with his native Argentina.

Although capped at Under-20 level, he hasn't featured for the full Argentine side and he is in possession of an Italian passport.

"The Italian national team? I'm just concentrating on Catania right now," said the man who scored the winner against Udinese on Wednesday.
