Italy to drop De Rossi?

La Stampa claims Cesare Prandelli might drop Daniele De Rossi from his Italy squad following the violent conduct he showed last night.

De Rossi is expected to receive a ban from UEFA after he was seen to elbow Darijo Srna during the second leg of a Champions League tie between Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Prandelli and the FIGC have put in place an ethical code and players who stray from it will not be called up for the national team.

Di Vaio's Azzurri fairytale

Marco Di Vaio dreams of playing for Italy again even though he knows he has no Azzurri future under Cesare Prandelli.

Di Vaio, born in July 1976, has been playing some wonderful stuff this season for Bologna and his brace at Juventus on Saturday saw him move up to third in the Serie A scorers' charts.

Having netted 16 top-flight goals so far this term, it doesn't come as a surprise that some are touting him as an Azzurri candidate.

Italy's Cafu and Candela

They're widely regarded as two of Italy's best full-backs, but it has been a long road to the top for Mattia Cassani and Federico Balzaretti, as Scott Fleming reveals

Making your way in Serie A can be a bit like a game of monopoly. One costly blunder, serious injury, or act of indiscipline, and you can be sent back to the start.

Two men who can testify to that are Palermo defenders Mattia Cassani and Federico Balzaretti. If you had told them a few years ago that they would simultaneously be contenders for a starting shirt with the Italian national team they would have laughed. If you told anyone else they would have said: "Who?"

Antognoni regrets not winning more

Fiorentina legend Giancarlo Antognoni regrets not winning more silverware despite being a member of the 1982 World Cup-winning side.

The former midfielder spent 15 year at the Artemio Franchi and very nearly inspired his side to the title in Serie A only for Juventus to pip Fiorentina to the post.

Speaking at a celebration in his honour, Antognoni said: "The 1982 World Cup was my only trophy, but I really wanted to win a Scudetto with Fiorentina even if the love of Florence is worth much more."

Prandelli: 'Lower youth team age'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has proposed a change of rules to limit the age of youth team players to 18. “Aged 20 you should be in the first team.”

Much has been said on the problems of bringing youth through the ranks to play in Serie A's top sides and Prandelli has a new plan.

“I believe we should help young players by limiting the maximum age of the Primavera youth teams to 18,” said the Italy Coach at the opening of the Viareggio youth tournament.

"Many teams can dream just like Napoli's fans whose team are putting on an extraordinary performance.

Barone wanted by Cremonese

Lega Pro side Cremonese are attempting to sign Italian 2006 World Cup winner Simone Barone.

The midfielder, still only 32, is sensationally without a club just five years after winning international football's ultimate prize.

Barone is a free agent which means he can sign for any club outside of the transfer window.

Released by Cagliari in the summer just 12 months into a three-year contract, Barone hasn't been picked up by any other club.
