Zola: 'Pirlo could be a brilliant move'

Former Cagliari coach Gianfranco Zola was sorry to see Maurizio Sarri lose his job but has claimed Juventus made a ‘courageous’ and possibly ‘brilliant’ move by appointing Andrea Pirlo.

Zola spent 2018-19 as Sarri’s assistant at his former club Chelsea, having failed to live up to the expectations as head coach of West Ham, Watford and Cagliari.

But the former Napoli, Parma and Cagliari player, believes Pirlo has the ‘knowledge’ to become a success with the Old Lady.

Sarri to cost Juventus 8.5m?

Maurizio Sarri is reportedly refusing to terminate his contract early by mutual consent, so Juventus will end up paying up to €8.5m.

The coach was unceremoniously fired despite winning the Serie A title and reaching the Coppa Italia Final, as a Champions League Round of 16 exit to Lyon was considered unforgivable.

Above all, his relationship with the team never really got off the ground and the Corriere della Sera newspaper claim he told directors ‘this team is untrainable.’

Napoli won't miss Everton's Allan

Seeing Allan join Carlo Ancelotti at Everton was the best solution for all concerned, writes Kaustubh Pandey, as Napoli should’ve sold him sooner.

It would have been strange to suggest that Napoli wouldn’t miss Allan if the Brazilian left the Partenopei at the same time as Jorginho in 2018, but times change. One of Maurizio Sarri’s most important players at the club until that summer, the former Udinese man often embodied a warrior-like box to box role in the heart of the midfield. His job was to protect Jorginho and make up for his occasional defensive lapses. He had to recycle possession quickly and often get involved in play as well.

Chiellini: 'Can't compare Pirlo to Sarri'

Captain Giorgio Chiellini stressed the Juventus players ‘did our best’ to perform under Maurizio Sarri and doesn’t think it’s right to compare Andrea Pirlo to the former coach.

Sarri lost his job after the Old Lady were eliminated from the Champions League this month and Juve have since appointed an inexperienced Pirlo as the new head coach at the Allianz Stadium.

However, the Bianconeri picked up their ninths consecutive Scudetto and Chiellini said he has ‘a lot of respect’ for Sarri, who ‘is a real person’.

Koulibaly perfect for Guardiola's City

Manchester City fans who don’t think Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly would be an ideal signing for Pep Guardiola are sorely mistaken, writes Kaustubh Pandey.

The Kalidou Koulibaly saga has been rumbling on for about three years now. It has knocked on the doors in every summer transfer window, as Napoli have always tried to catch some attention, create a bidding war and increase his asking price for potential suitors. That sentiment is reflected in every single statement that Aurelio De Laurentiis has given and his usual stubborn approach makes it seem pretty obvious.

ADL on Napoli, Osimhen, UEFA and more

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis urged fans to be ‘patient’ with Victor Osimhen, hit back at kit design complaints, former coaches, the Government and UEFA.

The patron attended the first pre-season training session today, in which striker Osimhen scored his opening goal.

“The fans ought to be patient with him, because Osimhen hasn’t played in seven months and still needs to get to know Italian football,” De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Serie A Seasons: Juventus 1990-91

Gigi Maifredi’s ‘champagne’ football and the signing of Roberto Baggio promised much, but the fizz soon went flat as Juventus endured their worst season for 30 years...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

Maurizio Sarri wasn’t the first coach who tried and failed to bring champagne football to the Old Lady. Juventus may now be the benchmark for Serie A clubs to aspire to, but back in 1990 they had fallen behind Milan and Napoli.

Sarri won't let Juve off contract hook

According to La Stampa newspaper, Maurizio Sarri is playing hardball in negotiations with Juventus, who want to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

The Bianconeri fired Sarri after just one season in charge, despite the fact he won the Scudetto and reached the Coppa Italia Final.

The 61-year-old is still under contract for another two years, so because he was sacked, Juventus have to keep paying his salary.

Matuidi: 'It was time to leave Juventus'

Blaise Matuidi explains why ‘the time had come’ to leave Juventus for Inter Miami, how COVID-19 changed his mind and learning to appreciate Maurizio Sarri.

The 33-year-old midfielder terminated his contract by mutual consent so that he could join David Beckham’s MLS club on a free transfer, ending three seasons in Turin.

“The time had come for a change of direction,” Matuidi told L’Equipe newspaper.

Failure is a fine line

The Champions League has again proved itself to be unpredictable and perhaps Juventus can re-evaluate the ‘failure’ tag when compared with Manchester City, writes Susy Campanale.

Maurizio Sarri was much-maligned for saying Juventus directors would be ‘amateurs’ to judge him on one Champions League match, but he was ultimately right. The decision to sack him had already been made, regardless of the result with Lyon. That’s just as well, because the 3-1 victory over Manchester City proved Juve were hardly the only victims of Rudi Garcia’s ruthless side.
