Failure is a fine line

The Champions League has again proved itself to be unpredictable and perhaps Juventus can re-evaluate the ‘failure’ tag when compared with Manchester City, writes Susy Campanale.

Maurizio Sarri was much-maligned for saying Juventus directors would be ‘amateurs’ to judge him on one Champions League match, but he was ultimately right. The decision to sack him had already been made, regardless of the result with Lyon. That’s just as well, because the 3-1 victory over Manchester City proved Juve were hardly the only victims of Rudi Garcia’s ruthless side.

Pirlo's Juventus revert to three?

Andrea Pirlo is reportedly planning a return to the three-man defence at Juventus, potentially with Alex Sandro and Danilo in more central roles.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pirlo is open to switching back to the system that had proved so successful under Antonio Conte and at times also Max Allegri.

Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 system didn’t work as well as it could’ve done, especially at the back, where the Bianconeri conceded a massive 43 Serie A goals.

Juventus approach for Dzeko

Sportitalia claim Juventus have started negotiations with Roma for Edin Dzeko as an alternative to Arkadiusz Milik and Alvaro Morata.

New coach Andrea Pirlo seemingly wants a strong and hard-working centre-forward who can hold up the ball for his teammates as well as score goals.

Milik has long been linked, including when Maurizio Sarri was at the helm, but Napoli want €50m for the Poland international.

Pirlo’s former teammate Morata is another option, currently struggling for playing time with Atletico Madrid.

Cagliari have named the full staff for coach Eusebio Di Francesco, including former Maurizio Sarri assistant manager Francesco Calzona and a sports psychologist.

This includes Calzona, who was Sarri’s assistant manager at both Empoli and Napoli until 2018.

Stefano Romano and Giancarlo Marini are his collaborators, with Paolo Orlandoni given the role of goalkeeping coach.

Mancini: 'Pirlo is lucky'

Italy CT Roberto Mancini says Atalanta can ‘play with confidence’ against Paris Saint-Germain and wishes Andrea Pirlo good luck at Juventus. ‘He’s lucky starting at the top’.

Atalanta face the Ligue 1 champions in the quarter-finals of the Champions League this week and Mancini was asked if he thinks the Orobici can go all the way in Europe this term.

“Let’s calm down and think of PSG, who are a great team and have more experience,” Mancini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Juventus are demanding, not dreaming

At least Juventus have finally admitted their ambitions out loud, but Kaustubh Pandey wonders if Andrea Pirlo is the man to make them a superclub.

Juventus desperately want to be seen as a superclub on the level of Real Madrid or Barcelona, to lift the Champions League and end that two-decade curse. At least President Andrea Agnelli admitted as much this time when sacking Maurizio Sarri, declaring out loud once and for all that no, the Scudetto is not the main objective of the season and European glory is not a dream. It is a target. Having said that, is Andrea Pirlo really the man to take them there?

Pirlo: 'I like 4-3-3 system'

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo gave some clues a few months ago as to how he wants his teams to play and why he'd buy Isco. ‘I like 4-3-3 with everyone bombing forward.’

The 41-year-old has no management experience and had only just been appointed coach of the Under-23 squad, which plays in Serie C, but a week later was promoted to the main job in place of sacked Maurizio Sarri.

Zola 'surprised' by Pirlo at Juventus

Gianfranco Zola admits to being ‘surprised’ by Andrea Pirlo’s appointment as the new Juventus coach. ‘It’s a courageous move from the club.’

Just over a week since he was unveiled as the coach of the Under-23 team, which plays in Serie C, Pirlo was suddenly promoted to the head coach role.

He is replacing Maurizio Sarri, who Zola worked with as an assistant manager at Chelsea last season.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised by this,” Zola told Sky Sport Italia.

Ulivieri: 'Pirlo knows more than most coaches'

Andrea Pirlo was appointed head coach at Juventus in his first managerial job, but Renzo Ulivieri reveals he ‘knows more about the game than most coaches who have been working for years.’

The decision to fire Maurizio Sarri was not entirely surprising, but Pirlo was promoted from the Under-23 job to the main bench without overseeing a single game.

Reports: Ronaldo talks with PSG

French reports continue to push the idea that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Juventus for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

It first emerged in France Football a few days ago, seemingly sparked from something that was said in October 2019, and is now spreading through Footmercato.

The suggestion is that Ronaldo is frustrated at the lack of Champions League progress at Juve and ready to try again at a different club that has traditionally struggled in this tournament.
