Juve ban supporter who mocked Superga

A Juventus supporter caught on camera mocking the victims of the Superga tragedy during the Turin derby has been identified and banned.

The incident occurred during last night’s 1-1 draw against Torino.

A banner unveiled by the ultras showed solidarity with their city rivals, as today is the 70th anniversary of the plane crash that wiped out the entire Grande Torino squad.

As that happened, a ‘fan’ was filmed in the stands miming a plane going down.

Derby della Mole moved

The derby between Juventus and Torino will now be played on Friday May 3 after the original date was on the anniversary of the Superga disaster.

The Derby della Mole had originally been scheduled for May 4, but that date fell on the 70th anniversary of the plane crash into the Superga hill, which claimed the lives of all 31 passengers on the plane carrying the Grande Torino squad.

Turin Derby could be moved for Superga

The Lega Serie A is open to changing the date of the upcoming Derby della Mole, as it falls on the anniversary of the Torino Superga tragedy.

This massive fixture between Torino and their arch rivals Juventus is set for the afternoon of May 4.

It immediately prompted protests from Toro and threats of a boycott, as that date is the 70th anniversary of the Superga crash, when a plane carrying the Grande Torino team went into the mountains outside the city, killing all on board.

Titles and tragedy in Turin

The Derby della Mole may not be the biggest in Italy, writes Gaby McKay, but the rivalry between Juventus and Torino has a deep and special history.

The site where arguably the greatest Italian side of all time met their tragic end isn’t immediately obvious. After taking an ancient single-track train up one of the steep hills which surround Turin, you arrive at a small café offering stunning views of the city below. Stunning views, that is, unless the hill is surrounded in icy fog as it often is.

Last Grande Torino player dies

Torino are in mourning after the death of Sauro Tomà, the member of the Grande Torino squad who missed the tragic Superga flight.

The squad dominated Italian football for years, but was wiped out by a plane crash as they flew back from a friendly against Benfica on May 4, 1949.

There were no survivors, including several famous Italian sports reporters.

Full-back Tomà did not take part in the match, and therefore missed that flight, due to a knee injury.

Derby guide: Derby della Mole

This evening sees the 195th official meeting between Juventus and Torino in the Derby della Mole.

It may not be the most fiercely contested city clash in Italian football, but the Turin derby is the oldest.

The first meeting between the sides took place in January 1907, Torino having formed three years earlier as an offshoot of Juventus.

It was the Granata who would hold the city’s bragging rights in the early years, winning the first Derby della Mole 2-1 and triumphing in eight of the first 10.

Torino announce Benfica friendly

Torino will play a friendly against Benfica in July, in memory of Il Grande Torino.

The great Granata side which won five Scudetti in a row - interrupted by World War II - were all killed when their plane crashed in the hills above Turin in May of 1949.

The Toro side were returning from a friendly against Benfica in Portugal when fog caused the pilot, Pierluigi Meroni, to crash into a wall behind the basilica at Superga.

Torino stadium renamed

Torino's Stadio Olimpico will officially become the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino as of today.

The club announced their satisfaction as the new title will commemorate the historical team that dominated Serie A in the 1940s, led by the likes of Valentino Mazzola, Pietro Ferraris and Ezio Loik.

The Granata have been playing in the Olimpico as of 2006, after 16 years at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Grande Torino stadium by Sunday

The local council confirmed the Stadio Olimpico in Turin will be renamed Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

This was the nickname given to the team that dominated Italian football in the 1940s until a plane crash into the Superga basilica overlooking the city on May 4 1949.

The decision went through another step in the process and the only one remaining is the red tape represented by the Prefecture.

The name change could take place before Sunday’s Serie A game against Sassuolo.
