Sokratis snubs Lazio for Olympiacos

Former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos had been heavily linked with Lazio and Genoa, but it’s now reported he’s going to Olympiacos.

He is a free agent after terminating his contract with the Gunners six months early.

While a return to his old club Genoa had been floated, Lazio seemed a very likely destination just this morning.

However, a few hours later, reports from Greece emerged that Sokratis was heading home to Olympiacos.

Sokratis set for Lazio transfer

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expected to sign for Lazio as a free agent after his Arsenal contract was terminated.

The defender had also been linked with a return to his old club Genoa, but the Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia now claim Lazio have secured a deal.

The Greek international had six months left on his Arsenal contract, but rather than negotiate a transfer fee, the Gunners decided it was better to simply terminate it early by mutual consent and allow him to find his next club.

Inter consider Eriksen-Torreira swap?

According to Tuttosport, Inter are considering a swap deal between Christian Eriksen and Lucas Torreira.

The Turin-based paper claims the Nerazzurri need to sign a back-up for Marcelo Brozovic and are considering a move for the Arsenal loanee who joined Atletico Madrid on a temporary deal last summer.

Torreira, a former Sampdoria midfielder, has also been linked with Fiorentina and Torino.

Genoa on Strootman and Sokratis

Genoa director Alessandro Zarbano won’t deny talks for Marseille midfielder Kevin Strootman and Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The pair have been heavily linked with loan moves in the January transfer window, with a medical expected for Strootman possibly over the weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, director Zarbano was asked if Strootman and Sokratis will arrive within days.

“They are two very good players, I don’t know if they’ll necessarily arrive within days,” he replied.

Genoa hand Sokratis an ultimatum

Genoa have reportedly informed Arsenal’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos they will sign another defender if he doesn’t make a final decision on his future by the end of the week.

The Greece international has emerged as a top transfer target for Genoa who seek to reinforce their defensive department in January.

Papastathopoulos is also being linked with a move to Fenerbache in the winter transfer window.

Sokratis prefers Genoa to Fenerbahce

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is leaning more towards a return to Genoa than a move to Fenerbahce, claim Sky Sport Italia.

Multiple sources over the last few days have pointed to negotiations with the Gunners for the Greek international, especially after Lazio option Denis Vavro disappointed in his medical.

According to Sky Sport Italia this evening, if the financial offers on the table are similar, then Sokratis would prefer Genoa to Fenerbahce.

He already knows the club well, having played for the Grifone from 2008 to 2010.

Sanchez has missed eight out of 12 penalties

Inter forward Alexis Sanchez’s penalty miss against Sampdoria was his eighth in 12 attempts between club and national teams.

The Chilean missed a penalty when Inter’s run of eight wins was stopped by the Blucerchiati on Wednesday.

Samp goalkeeper Emil Audero started the match with a decisive penalty save against Sanchez, who stepped up in the absence of Romelu Lukaku.

Goal.com highlighted the efforts from the spot during his career, as Sanchez has 12 attempts in total but has only converted four of them.

Genoa drop Vavro, call Sokratis

Genoa have definitively abandoned their bid for Lazio defender Denis Vavro, as the results of his medical were not encouraging, turning to Sokratis Papastathopoulos instead.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the deal has been dropped entirely now after several days of increasing concerns about his fitness levels.

Genoa want Sokratis reunion

Genoa are seeking a reunion with Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, claim Tuttomercatoweb.

The Grifone are already diving into the past following the return of coach Davide Ballardini for his fourth different stint at the club.

Papastathopoulos also played for Genoa from 2008-10 before moving on to Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund and since 2018 has been on the Arsenal books.

However, his contract expires in June and he is not even on the Premier League squad list this season.

Juventus refuse to sign Ozil for free

According to Tuttosport, Arsenal have offered Mesut Ozil to Juventus with the Gunners open to paying half of the player’s wages, but the Old Lady are not interested.

The German attacking midfielder has been left out of Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League lists for the current campaign.

The 32-year-old has yet to make one official appearance this season and his North London exit in January seems likely.
