Lautaro Martinez hit back at Sky Sport Italia pundit Billy Costacurta for suggesting he doesn’t deliver in the big games and reiterates he wants to ‘make history’ at Inter.

The Argentina international was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup, although he did not score a single goal from open play, finding the net only during a penalty shoot-out.

He then blasted his spot-kick over the bar in the shoot-out with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 earlier this month.

That prompted former Milan defender Costacurta to criticise Lautaro Martinez, suggesting he is not a big game player and does not step up when it really matters.

“What Costacurta said is not true. Scoring a goal in the Champions League semi-final against Milan, one of the most important games in the history of both clubs… he didn’t count that,” the striker told TyC Sports in Argentina.

“I would invite him to go back and watch that goal again. Not just that, but many other big matches I played in.”

Lautaro Martinez is currently discussing a new contract to extend his stay at Inter and continues to reassure that he only sees his future in the Nerazzurri jersey.

“I am experiencing a wonderful moment at Inter. The truth is, I did not imagine my career to be like this, especially considering the history of Argentinean players at Inter. Instead, I got this marvellous opportunity and have been at Inter for six years. It is very important for me to make history with this club and beat records.

“I keep working day after day and hope to continue this journey to give the fans joy, as from the first moment they gave me an incredible welcome. I try to give my all on the pitch, that is my job.”

Although they are out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia, Inter have already lifted the Supercoppa Italiana this season and are 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A table.
