Italy still seeking an identity

Almost a year since Roberto Mancini took over, Anthony Barbagallo believes the Azzurri are playing more attractive football, but still lack cohesion.

After the Giampiero Ventura fiasco and the realisation that Italy wouldn’t compete at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, several Italian Coaches – including Carlo Ancelotti – declined the Azzurri’s job offer. Instead, the Nazionale appointed Roberto Mancini – a modern tactician who has won numerous trophies in the English Premier League, Serie A and in Turkey.

Italy’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign kicked off with an expected win over Finland. However, despite this being their third consecutive victory and fourth straight clean sheet, Roberto Mancini is still showing only glimpses of his Azzurri vision.

Mancini: 'Bernardeschi so versatile'

Roberto Mancini admires Federico Bernardeschi’s versatility for Italy and insists “it’s not enough to have a champion in the squad to succeed.”

The Euro 2020 qualifying campaign kicks off against Finland at 19.45 GMT.

“Modern football is more balanced than it was even just a few years ago. There are no more easy games, every team has improved tactically and it’s not enough to have a champion in the squad to succeed,” Mancini told Rai Sport.

Italy: Kean to replace Chiesa?

Moise Kean is the favourite to replace injured Federico Chiesa in Italy’s trident attack against Finland, with Ciro Immobile and Federico Bernardeschi.

The Euro 2020 qualifier kicks off at 19.45 GMT on Saturday at the Dacia Arena in Udine.

Chiesa left the camp this afternoon, as he cannot recover in time from the muscular problem that had prevented him training for the last two days.

Alessandro Florenzi is also in doubt after pulling up with a left calf issue today.

Bernardeschi: Ronaldo ban crazy!

Federico Bernardeschi claims UEFA would be ‘crazy’ to ban Cristiano Ronaldo and that Italy need Juventus’ ‘belief in their strength’.

UEFA is investigating Ronaldo for ‘improper conduct’ after he mimicked Diego Simeone’s explicit gesture following Juve’s Champions League comeback against Atletico Madrid last week.

“I don’t think anything needs to be added,” Bernardeschi said at a Press conference.

Revealed: Italy's training XI

Italy CT Roberto Mancini tried out a front three of Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile and Federico Bernardeschi in training on Monday.

ANSA reports Mancini went with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal and a back four of Alessandro Florenzi, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Cristiano Biraghi.

A three-man midfield of Nicolo Barella, Jorginho and Marco Verratti would then have supported a Chiesa-Immobile-Bernardeschi trident up top.

Berna's big break

One of the most impressive aspects of Juventus’ Champions League comeback against Atletico Madrid was Federico Bernardeschi’s performance, writes Emmet Gates.

It had never been done. Couldn’t be done, went the logic. Juventus had never reversed a 2-0 first-leg defeat in Europe. And they weren’t just fighting history, they were fighting Cholo Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, who many in Italy have likened to a Serie A side.

And yet, remarkably, almost unfathomably - and totally in keeping with recent seasons of the Champions League - they pulled it off. The 3-0 result and performance was as comprehensive as they’ve produced in this competition since the quarter-final first leg against Barcelona two years ago.
