The Derby Della Madonnina is upon us, so Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall sees how both rivals changed since the last clash

It was Fyodor Dostoevsky who said: “Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.” And yet this is what Milan did. In October, the world seemed a very different place for both the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri, especially as the latter had just won the Derby Della Madonnina at the last gasp thanks to Mauro Icardi’s strike. It seems so distant now, as the trajectory of both clubs changed radically over the last five months.

Milan discuss Gigio renewal?

Milan have reportedly opened talks with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma over a new contract.

According to Sport Mediaset, Donnarumma’s agent Mino Raiola has an ‘excellent’ relationship with Milan director Leonardo, as opposed to predecessor Massimiliano Mirabelli.

Furthermore, negotiations over an extension until 2024 with a ‘slight improvement’ on his current €6m salary would be ‘already under way’.

Mancini: No Icardi problem, Milan...

Roberto Mancini has no regrets making Mauro Icardi Inter’s captain in 2015 and is impressed with Milan, ‘especially their two January signings’.

Icardi was handed Inter’s captaincy by Mancini prior to being stripped of it earlier in February, while Milan have yet to lose a game with Krzysztof Piatek and Lucas Paqueta on the field.

“Gattuso’s Milan? They’re a team with some great players, especially their two January signings,” continued the Italy CT to Tiki Taka.

Galliani: Happy birthday, Gigio!

Adriano Galliani has paid tribute to Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on his 20th birthday. “I hope he remains Rossonero forever.”

Galliani was Milan’s CEO when Donnarumma made his breakthrough at the club, the Italy international going from dollar bills being thrown at him to surpassing 150 appearances for the Diavolo.

“First of all, happy birthday Gigio,” the 74-year-old told Milan News.

Meret: No worse than Donnarumma

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret has insisted that ‘I don’t feel inferior’ to Italy rival and fellow young gun Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Meret and Donnarumma are considered Italy’s two goalkeepers of the future, but the Napoli shot-stopper is two years older and has been held back by injuries, while the Milan glovesman recently celebrated his 150th appearance for the club.

Romagnoli singles out Milan stars

Alessio Romagnoli says Milan ‘enjoy’ having Krzysztof Piatek at the club and that Gianluigi Donnarumma is already a ‘phenomenon’.

Piatek has made an instant impact at Milan, scoring three goals in his first three appearances for the club, while Donnarumma will make his 150th Rossoneri appearance against Cagliari on Sunday, despite only turning 20 later this month.

“I’m taking on the captaincy with great serenity, I have to go on like this,” Romagnoli said at a Nike event in Milan.

Zoff reveals Donnarumma 'secret'

Legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff believes he has the secret to Gianluigi Donnarumma’s improved form for Milan this season. “He became a man.”

Off-field problems seemed to affect Donnarumma last season, but the Milan teenager has kept goal for the fourth-best Serie A defence this term and gone on to establish himself as Italy’s No 1.

“His secret? It’s simple, he became a man,” Zoff, regarded by many as the Azzurri’s greatest-ever shot-stopper after Gianluigi Buffon, told Corriere della Sera.

Scaroni: ‘Milan become a team’

Milan President Paolo Scaroni praises the impact Krzysztof Piatek has made while he insists that they’ve “become a team” thanks to Coach Gennaro Gattuso.

The Rossoneri’s draw with Roma on Sunday night kept them in fourth place in the Serie A table in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Donnarumma: 'Milan target is fourth'

Gianluigi Donnarumma wished Gonzalo Higuain luck ahead of the Chelsea move, but Milan beat Genoa and “our objective is fourth place.”

The shot-stopper performed some fantastic saves to help them in a 2-0 victory at Marassi, with Fabio Borini and Suso goals.

This game was played on a Monday, as Milan lost the Supercoppa clash with Juventus in Jeddah on Wednesday.
