Madrid push for Icardi

Real Madrid are reportedly still pushing for Mauro Icardi, but the Inter striker notes “you are the master of your own destiny”.

Los Merengues have been heavily linked with the striker, who has a €110m release clause which becomes active in the summer.

While the Nerazzurri are keen to offer a new contract with a higher wage and higher release clause, Corriere dello Sport believes the Spanish giants are very keen to bring him to La Liga.

Figo: Inter can’t lose Icardi

Luis Figo has urged Inter not to sell Mauro Icardi to Real Madrid and looked back on his ‘terrific’ spell with the Nerazzurri.

Links between Icardi and Madrid resurfaced on Friday, while Figo spent four seasons at Inter between 2005 and 2009, winning four straight Scudetti.

“Icardi to Madrid? It’s clear that it wouldn’t be good for Inter or Italian football to lose big players,” the former Portugal winger told Corriere della Sera.

Icardi to Real Madrid for Champions?

Mauro Icardi could leave Inter for Real Madrid at the end of the season if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, it’s reported.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Argentina international is losing patience with his club, as every summer there is a revamp.

Although Icardi has scored a remarkable 99 goals in 176 Serie A games, he has never featured in the Champions League.

As he turns 25 next month, Maurito is not willing to put that debut off for much longer.

No Icardi-Real Madrid move

Multiple Italian outlets say there is no truth in Spanish reports Inter striker Mauro Icardi had a secret medical with Real Madrid.

The claims were made in Diario Gol, suggesting there would be a January switch to the Bernabeu.

Several Italian sources, including highly-respected Sky Sport Italia pundit Gianluca Di Marzio, have denied this and insist there is no evidence whatsoever of a mid-season exit from San Siro.

Icardi didn’t have Madrid medical

Mauro Icardi’s entourage have categorically denied the Inter striker took a medical with Real Madrid, as has been claimed in Spain.

Diario Gol claimed that the Nerazzurri captain took a secret medical in Milan, and is ready to join Los Merengues this month.

There is a €110m release clause in Icardi’s contract, but that’s only valid in the summer so he’d cost more this month.

Inter's season so far

The winter break gives Richard Hall time to assess the season so far for Inter and he has seen more highs than lows.

Luciano Spalletti arrived in the summer to much enthusiasm. He had a plan to stabilise a club that had no confidence and, despite not getting all his summer requests, he started well. Settling on a fixed XI, he navigated a tough start against Fiorentina and Roma, before taking his team on an unbeaten run that lasted to December.

A surprise defeat to Udinese and Sassuolo, however, rocked the team and has found the Tuscan unable to get the best out of his players. He will be hoping for a good start after the break has concluded.

Icardi: 'Inter lack fighting spirit'

Mauro Icardi bitterly criticised his Inter teammates after a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina. “It was a bad performance, we’ve been lacking the desire to fight.”

The striker scored his 18th goal in 20 Serie A appearances, but was under no illusions at the Stadio Franchi.

“It’s a good average, but I don’t like scoring these goals if they aren’t useful for a team victory,” Icardi told Inter TV.

Time for Inter to start worrying

The Nerazzurri are now without a win in their last five league matches and in danger of slipping out the Champions League places, writes Nick Valerio.

The slump goes on. In truth, it could and should have been a lot worse for Luciano Spalletti’s men.

Despite opening the scoring through talisman Mauro Icardi, Fiorentina dominated from start to finish and their stoppage-time equaliser was the least the hosts deserved, though both teams can feel aggrieved for different reasons.

Simeone holds Inter in stoppages

Fiorentina wasted far too many scoring opportunities and eventually snatched a late point to hold Inter with Giovanni Simeone’s equaliser.

The Viola arguably dominated the match and certainly kept the momentum up throughout at the Stadio Franchi, but their finishing was dismal.

Cyril Thereau was guilty of missing two sitters, while Federico Chiesa and Giovanni Simeone also failed to get the best out of their chances.
