Witsel: So close to Juve

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel has revealed how close he was to joining Juventus. “I only had to sign the contract.”

Witsel to Juve was one of the longest-running transfer sagas throughout 2016, but the midfielder ended up leaving Zenit St Petersburg for Chinese club Tianjin Tianhai the following January.

He has now revealed that he even underwent a medical with the Bianconeri, only for Zenit to change his mind at the 11th hour.

Agent: Napoli wanted Witsel, but…

Axel Witsel’s agent claims Napoli wanted the Borussia Dortmund new boy but warned him ‘he’d just be one of many’ at the San Paolo.

Witsel recently ended a 20-month spell in China as he joined Dortmund, but Paul Stefani suggested the former Juventus target could have become a Napoli or Manchester United player.

“There were other teams interested. Manchester United wanted him, Napoli too,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

Spalletti calls in Witsel

Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti has reportedly contacted his old Zenit player Axel Witsel, currently at Tianjin Quanjian.

The Belgium international spent five years at Zenit St Petersburg, much of that time under the guidance of Spalletti.

He had been very close to a Serie A move in the past, famously sitting in the Juventus HQ for hours on deadline day only for the transfer to fall through, as Zenit couldn’t find a suitable replacement.

Witsel: Nainggolan important, but…

Axel Witsel insists Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan is still “an important part” of the Belgium squad but warns “it’s not up to us players”.

Nainggolan has been exiled from Belgium’s team by Roberto Martinez, with the Coach reportedly unhappy that the 29-year-old has not given up his smoking habit.

“He’s a good player and an important part of the team,” the former Juventus target told reporters ahead of the Red Devils’ 2018 World Cup qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

‘Napoli need focus’

Fabio Cannavaro believes Napoli need more focus as “they’ve dropped points at home to the smaller teams”.

The Partenopei drew with Juventus on Sunday night but remain 10 points from the Serie A summit, and the Tianjin Quanjian Coach has some advice for them.

“What do Napoli need?” Cannavaro considered, speaking to La Stampa.

“A leap in quality, they’ve dropped points at home to the medium and small teams: that makes a difference.
