Meret: 'Buffon still my hero'

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret celebrated the first trophy of his career, especially winning the Coppa Italia against Juventus. ‘Gigi Buffon proved he’s still Number One.’

The game ended 0-0 on the night, thanks largely to Buffon heroics, and the Partenopei eventually won 4-2 on penalties.

“It’s so exciting, I think we had a great journey, showed we could suffer at moments and proved we could play in others,” the goalkeeper told RAI Sport.

Buffon: 'More fired up than ever'

Gigi Buffon maintains he is ‘more fired up than ever’ precisely because he gets fewer opportunities to play for Juventus, as he could make Coppa Italia history.

The 42-year-old goalkeeper has won five editions of this trophy, so a sixth would enable him to equal Roberto Mancini’s record.

Juve face Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome tomorrow at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I am playing less this season, so naturally when I do step on to the field, I am more fired up than ever,” Buffon told DAZN.

D'Amico: 'I'll retire before Buffon!'

Gianluigi Buffon’s partner, TV presenter Ilaria D’Amico, describes living in lockdown with an extended family, taking the Juventus pay cut and why she’ll retire before he does.

The first Serie A player to be diagnosed with COVID-19 was Daniele Rugani, followed soon after by teammates Blaise Matuidi and Paulo Dybala.

“We were frightened at first, especially as Gigi is such an affectionate person who likes to hug his teammates,” D’Amico told Tuttosport.

“I spent the first month watching, listening and learning, as it’s all so new to me,” Barzagli told Fabio Cannavaro during an Instagram Live chat.

There is video circulating online of Buffon signing autographs in the mixed zone following last night’s match at San Siro.

“I’m watching you, eh? Corona, eh? Damn, are you from Wuhan?” said Buffon as those around them laughed.

“The reason I am still playing is that I believe I can perform at a high level,” he told Rai Sport.
