Moratti: 'Icardi better than Lukaku'

Former President Massimo Moratti is “genuinely curious to see Antonio Conte’s Inter,” but insists Mauro Icardi is a better striker than Edin Dzeko or Romelu Lukaku.

The patron who was in charge when they won the Treble in 2010 gave his views on the current situation with new Coach Conte.

“I am genuinely curious to see Conte’s Inter. I think the quality of the Coach means he can achieve great things here,” Moratti told reporters at a sponsorship event.

'Oriali & Conte ideal for Inter'

Massimo Moratti has praised Inter for bringing back Gabriele Oriali, while describing new boss Antonio Conte as a ‘good’ choice.

Conte has replaced Luciano Spalletti as Coach and is set to reunite with his Italy team manager Oriali, who is known for his long association with the Nerazzurri on and off the field.

“I’m convinced that returns are welcome, above all in his case because he’s a person absolutely linked to Inter in terms of history, tradition and character,” Moratti told ANSA.

Moratti: Why not two stadia?

Massimo Moratti has urged Inter and Milan not to knock down San Siro, explaining that ‘it wouldn’t hurt to have two stadiums.’

The two Milan clubs are reportedly ready to demolish San Siro and replace it with a new, 60,000-seater stadium, but Moratti insists the long-standing venue has too much history.

“I’m really sorry that we’re thinking of knocking down San Siro for more than one reason,” the former Nerazzurri President told Il Giorno.

Wanda: 'Icardi distraught at armband'

Wanda Nara was in tears as she confessed Mauro Icardi was distraught at losing the Inter captaincy. “It was like taking away a leg. It is not our intention to leave.”

She is something of an incongruous figure for Icardi, as she is his wife, his agent and also a TV presenter with her own career on Mediaset sports review show Tiki Taka.

It was on this programme last week that her comments infuriated the Inter directors and Icardi’s teammates.

Moratti: 'Useless' to punish Icardi now

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has questioned the club’s decision to strip Mauro Icardi of their captaincy. “It seems like a useless thing to do.”

Inter’s decision came after Icardi’s agent-wife Wanda Nara went public with a series of statements about the striker’s future, but Moratti defended the Argentine, describing him as ‘a great captain’.

“Do I long for Bergomi and Zanetti? I also found a great captain in Icardi,” he told Sport Mediaset.

Mazzarri was wrong for Inter

As Inter visit Torino, Football Italia’s Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks back at the Walter Mazzarri years and analyses where it all went wrong.

It’s October 2014 and Inter Coach Walter Mazzarri is talking to the Press before a defeat to Fiorentina. “I’d tell you what is happening within the team right now, but whatever I say will be interpreted as an excuse. I have been through this many times before. Believe me the less I say, the better.”

A month later and he was gone, with few bidding him bon voyage. It was the first dismissal of his career. As he prepares to welcome his former club on the Torino bench, there will be no love lost from either side.

The Icardi Show

As yet more contract negotiations drag on between Mauro Icardi and Inter, Richard Hall gets out the popcorn and enjoys the three-ring San Siro circus.

“Don’t fight it, it’s coming for you” may be a line from ‘The Greatest Showman’, but it should also be one of Mauro Icardi’s many tattoos. It references the many defenders who will have seen the lethal Argentine dispatch them after half a chance, but it is also perhaps relevant to his behaviour off the pitch. As his contract negotiations wrangle on in full public view, Inter should also realise that this is his show and this is how he operates. It is not as if this hasn’t happened before.

'Icardi right to make Inter demands'

Former Inter owner Massimo Moratti says Mauro Icardi is ‘right’ to ask the club for a pay rise.

Icardi’s agent-wife Wanda Nara is reportedly demanding €9m a season for the striker to sign a new contract with Inter, leading to an apparent stand-off between the Nerazzurri and their captain.

“Every year there’s the issue of Icardi’s renewal,” Moratti told Sport Mediaset.

“I think the player has the right to think about a better contract, but I think the club have formulated a strategy to keep him.
