Inter lay Darmian groundwork

Matteo Darmian could return to Italy with Inter as a free agent when his Manchester United contract expires.

The 28-year-old defender, who can play in any role in a back three or four, was already very close to Inter and Juventus over the last few months.

Jose Mourinho refused to release the Italy international for less than €20m, so the two Serie A sides looked elsewhere.

According to the Corriere dello Sport newspaper, Inter are laying the groundwork for another approach as his contract runs down.

Mourinho: ‘Darmian won’t leave’

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho confirms “we opened the door” for Juventus and Inter target Matteo Darmian, but he’ll stay at Old Trafford.

The Italian international was heavily linked with a return to Serie A, with the Bianconeri particularly interested.

However, they wouldn’t go above a €13m transfer fee, which was nowhere near the €20m the Red Devils were demanding.

“I don't think he will go,” Mourinho said in his Press conference today.

The 24-year-old, who only moved to San Siro last year, has previous experience of playing in Ligue 1 for Nice.

Spalletti to decide on Darmian?

It is reported Inter are still in contact with Matteo Darmian’s representatives, with Coach Luciano Spalletti set to decide whether he needs the Manchester United man.

The Nerazzurri were known to be in the hunt for a full-back but recently signed Croatian Sime Vrsaljko from Atletico Madrid.

That appeared to end speculation that Italy defender Darmian could move to San Siro, with Napoli now the favourites for his signature.

However, transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims Inter may still want the 28-year-old after all.
