Serie B: Lotito slams 'crazy' Ventura

It looks as if Gian Piero Ventura is getting the sack after Salernitana failed to qualify for the promotion play-offs, as President Claudio Lotito was caught on camera calling the coach ‘crazy.’

The former Italy tactician had been tasked with taking Salernitana into Serie A, or at the very least the promotion play-offs.

They had been in pole position last night, until a shock 2-1 home defeat to Spezia.

Only in Serie A: Maresca the Matador

Enzo Maresca literally grabbed the bull by the horns when he celebrated a late Juventus equaliser against Torino, in a heated Derby della Mole...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

On paper, Enzo Maresca’s Juventus career was nothing to write home about. Playing just 58 times between 2000 and 2004, he spent just as much of his spell away from Turin. Yet it took just one of those 58 appearances for the midfielder to cement his place in Old Lady folklore with a dramatic equaliser and a legendary goal celebration against Torino back in February 2002.

Mancio making amends

Roberto Mancini knows all too well that Italy are judged on results during tournaments, writes Giancarlo Rinaldi, so let’s hold fire on the celebrations.

Looking back at your old football almanacs, it is still hard to believe your eyes. The 36 appearances and four goals are about 70 matches and 20 strikes behind where the figures should have been for a player of his talent. No wonder Roberto Mancini has the feel of a man with unfinished business when it comes to the national team.

Mancini: 'Italy embraced new ideas'

Roberto Mancini was surprised by how quickly Italy assimilated his positive football ideas, “focusing more on quality. This is the path forward now.”

The Azzurri can complete a perfect qualifying record in Group J with their final match against Armenia, which kicks off in Palermo on Monday at 19.45 GMT.

“I didn’t expect to win 10 games in a row, but the qualification to Euro 2020 is what really matters more than the record,” said the CT in his press conference.

Practically perfect Italy progress

Italy are a team transformed from World Cup failures to Euro 2020 perfect records, but Giancarlo Rinaldi awaits further developments.

They might have disguised themselves in green, but it did not leave us feeling blue. From one of the lowest points in the history of the Italian national team, we really could not have asked for more.

A 100% Euro 2020 qualification record - matched only by Belgium - and a place secured with three games to spare would have seemed almost unimaginable two years ago. Roberto Mancini has delivered on his promises with the same style he used to produce with the Sampdoria Number 10 on his back.

Official: Cerci joins Salernitana

Alessio Cerci is back in Italian football after signing for Salernitana, where he reunites with Giampiero Ventura.

The 32-year-old attacking winger had the best period of his career working with Ventura at Torino.

Since leaving for Atletico Madrid in a €15m deal in 2014, it has been all downhill.

Cerci flopped in Madrid, at Milan, Genoa, Hellas Verona and Ankaragucu in Turkey.

He was a free agent and has signed on for Serie B strugglers Salernitana.

Ventura to reunite with Cerci

Giampiero Ventura could reunite with Alessio Cerci again in Serie B with Salernitana this season.

The pair had their best results together at Torino, but struggled when moving on to other clubs and infamously the Italy squad.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ventura has asked his new team Salernitana to purchase Cerci.

The winger turns 32 later this month and is a free agent, as his contract with Turkish side Ankaragucu expired.

Cerci to reunite with Ventura?

Former Italy international Alessio Cerci could reunite with his Torino boss Giampiero Ventura at Serie B side Salernitana.

According to Il Mattino, Salernitana are ‘serious’ about bringing in Cerci, despite his wage demands.

The 32-year-old has experienced a dramatic fall from grace since leaving the Granata in 2014.

He spent last season at Turkish side Ankaragucu but made just three League starts and was dropped for the second half of the campaign.
