Verratti: ‘Buffon would answer Italy call’

Marco Verratti insists his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Gianluigi Buffon “will always answer” if Italy call on him.

The 40-year-old asked Azzurri CT Roberto Mancini not to call him after he took over, partly because he felt fans and media didn’t want him.

“It’s his home!” Verratti told Le Parisien, when asked about Buffon and the national team.

“I’m sure that if Italy needs him, he will always answer. When we talk about it he tells me that he’ll always be there to help the team.

Buffon: ‘Verratti Italy’s only talent’

Gianluigi Buffon believes his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Marco Verratti is “the only true talent of Italian football”.

The legendary goalkeeper won the World Cup with the Azzurri in 2006 and has won more caps than any other player, but appears to have retired from international duty.

“It’s very clear with [CT Roberto] Mancini,” Buffon told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We talked in May and he was very kind and respectful. it was a constructive conversation.

‘Motta another Simeone, Verratti…’

Laurent Blanc’s Paris Saint-Germain assistant is backing former Italy midfielder Thiago Motta to emulate Diego Simeone as a Coach.

Jean-Louis Gasset worked with Motta between 2013 and 2016, before he became a Coach in his own right, taking over Saint-Etienne last year.

The 36-year-old, meanwhile, retired from football at the end of last season and has since been handed the reins of PSG’s Under-19 team.

“With Thiago Silva and Thiago Motta, tactics were discussed without stopping,” Gasset told Le Parisien.

Italy's midfield is missing

After defeat in Portugal, Adam Digby looks at how an incoherent midfield remains Italy’s biggest problem and one that Roberto Mancini must address.

There is perhaps some irony seeing Claudio Marchisio showing off his new Zenit St Petersburg shirt just days before the latest outing for the Italian national team.

When the former Juventus man pulls on the sky blue kit of the Russian Premier League side, he will no longer wear the No.8 shirt that had long been on the back of his Bianconero one. Instead it will be a 10, and on Monday evening in Lisbon, the Azzurri lacked both a player fit to wear that most prestigious of numbers and any representative from the midfielder’s former club.

Zaniolo makes Italy history

Roma midfielder Nicolò Zaniolo is the fourth Italy player to receive a call-up before he has even made his Serie A debut.

He turned 19 in July and came up through the Inter youth academy, but made the move to Roma as part of the deal taking Radja Nainggolan to San Siro.

The creative midfielder was a very surprising pick for Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad in the UEFA Nations League clashes with Poland and Portugal.

Italy: Balotelli in, Verratti out?

Mario Balotelli is expected to receive another Italy call-up, but injury rules out Marco Verratti.

Among them would be Balotelli, but a thigh injury to Verratti sees him join Andrea Conti, Mattia De Sciglio and Alessandro Florenzi on the treatment table.

Verratti answers disabled boy's appeal

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti has replaced a €10,000 computer allowing a nine-year-old child to communicate after it was stolen.

The Italy international read about the appeal sent out by the boy’s father and immediately worked to get the funds into their account.

The situation developed in Bologna, where a school was burgled twice in the same week, thieves taking away computers, projectors and special equipment allowing nine-year-old Andrea D’Osso to communicate with teachers and students.
