Mancini: 'Glad I took Italy risks'

Roberto Mancini looks back over his Italy mistakes and is proud to have “run risks” with young talent, but while praising Marco Verratti, warns Mario Balotelli “has to do more.”

The Nazionale boss sat down with Italian television station DAZN to discuss his first year on the bench.

“I think people like this Nazionale. We have players who are technically gifted and I hope that can bring the fans back towards feeling close to the team. There is a lot of enthusiasm around us at the moment and I think that’s very important.”

Liecht at the end of the tunnel?

It was heartening to see an Italy goalfest after what felt like years, but Giancarlo Rinaldi won’t get too excited about thrashing 10-man Liechtenstein.

The middle road is not one often taken by football fans, particularly Italian ones. We lurch from profound despair over a defeat to ecstatic joy in victory - sometimes in the space of a few days. It is something which supporters are allowed to indulge in, of course, but Roberto Mancini will surely be working to avoid.

A 2-0 victory over Finland had many decidedly underwhelmed, but the Stadio Tardini was the scene of an all-you-can-eat goal buffet against Liechtenstein.

Buffon and PSG recurring nightmare

Gianluigi Buffon’s Champions League nightmare continues, as Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out by a last-gasp Manchester United penalty.

PSG had a 2-0 first leg lead at Old Trafford, but become the first team ever to overturn that result in the Champions League.

Romelu Lukaku pounced on a terrible back-pass to put United ahead within two minutes, then Juan Bernat equalised straight away.

New PSG contract for Verratti?

There had been concerns over Verratti’s fitness following a long lay-off with repeated injuries, but he made his comeback last week and is placed in the starting XI tonight.

Buffon is chosen rather than Alphonse Areola and becomes the fourth player aged 41 and over to feature in a Champions League match – the second Italian.

Brits just don't get Jorginho

The debate within the Premier League on whether Jorginho is pivotal or pathetic shows a football culture clash with the rest of Europe, explains Elio Salerno.

“How many assists has he got this season? Around 2,000 passes, no assists! He’s not a great defender, once a game gets like this against the big teams he gets overrun in midfield. He can’t run, so he does not give you anything defensively and he doesn’t give you anything at the other end of the pitch”.

Those were the words of six-time Premier League champion Rio Ferdinand following Chelsea’s defeat at Arsenal last weekend, when asked for his opinion on Italy international Jorginho.

Verratti reassured on injury

Italy and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has only sprained his ankle with no fracture.

The 26-year-old limped off during the opening stages of their 9-0 victory over Guingamp on Saturday, as he fell awkwardly and his ankle was accidentally trodden on by Felix Eboa-Eboa.

Coach Thomas Tuchel immediately said he was concerned it was “a serious injury,” prompting some to assume there was a fracture or ligament damage.
