Ranieri: 'Zaniolo not heir to Totti'

Sampdoria coach Claudio Ranieri calmed down the pressure on Nicolò Zaniolo by warning the Roma starlet “is not the heir” to Francesco Totti.

After two goals for Italy during the 9-1 win over Armenia on Monday, Zaniolo became the youngest Roma player to score for Italy.

It has prompted the former coach to calm down the expectations surrounding the Azzurri talent.

“Zaniolo is not heir to Totti,” Ranieri told the Corriere dello Sport at a meeting between the coaches and referees in Rome yesterday.

Dzeko: 'Roma lost something'

Roma striker Edin Dzeko believes the club have "lost something" since Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi left over the summer.

Speaking to La Stampa ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina's Euro 2020 qualifier against Italy on Friday night, Dzeko admitted Roma were worse off without the iconic duo.

"Something's been lost. They showed personality, on and off the pitch," explained the 33-year-old.

Zaniolo: 'Would never take Roma 10'

Nicolo Zaniolo has poured scorn over the suggestion that he would like to take over Francesco Totti's No 10 shirt at Roma.

The 20-year old has hit real form of late, scoring in four consecutive games for the Giallorossi, including a long-range strike during the 2-1 win against Napoli on Saturday.

Asked by UEFA.com whether he would like to inherit Totti's iconic No 10 jersey - which has remained vacant since his retirement in 2017 - Zaniolo immediately shot down the idea.

'Roma doors always open to Totti'

Roma CEO Guido Fienga has declared that his club's doors are open to Francesco Totti if he wishes to return.

Fienga spoke at Roma's annual shareholders meeting on Monday, notably expressing sadness at Totti's departure over the summer.

"Totti is certainly one of the most important players in the history of Roma, he continues to be one of our heroes," stated the executive.

"We love him, but he is no longer part of the group and we can't take him into account. We respect his choice."

Pioli relives Roma nightmares

New Milan coach Stefano Pioli returns to the Olimpico on Sunday, but Vijay Rahaman notes the former Lazio boss has some bad memories of Roma.

Stefano Pioli takes his Milan team to the Stadio Olimpico to face Roma, but his record against the Giallorossi is one that may be of concern.

Overall, the Parma-born coach has a record of just three wins, seven draws and 11 losses versus I Lupi. The situation was even more disconcerting when involved in the Rome Derby, as in charge of Lazio Pioli managed one draw and three defeats. The 54-year-old made his debut on the Milan bench with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Lecce, another team clad in yellow and red, so it seems these colours are like Kryptonite for Pioli.

Zeman: This Roma belongs to no-one!

Zdenek Zeman has claimed that this Roma side belongs to ‘no-one’ and also hit out at Lazio for their lack of ambition.

Roma lost Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi over the summer, and Zeman feels his former club no long have an identity, pointing the figure at “whereabouts unknown” President James Pallotta.

“I think they will [return], but there must be the right conditions,” he told Il Messaggero.

“Francesco had to say ‘enough’ because they only used him for advertising purposes.

“We had fun, especially in the first half with so many chances to score,” he told reporters.
