Serie A 2019-20 Season Review: Torino

Torino’s season was on a downward slide from the moment they lost the Europa League play-off and never recovered, writes Owen Diana.

Granata gutted

Hope abounded for Torino when their campaign began last July. The Granata were back in the Europa League for the first time since an inspired run to the Round of 16 in 2014-15. Yet, a season that promised so much has turned into a huge let-down for one of Italy’s most historic clubs.

Break was a blessing for Inter

The extended break in the season may well prove to be a blessing in disguise for Inter, claims Richard Hall, as they can still reshuffle and win the Coppa Italia.

Out of the dark, comes light. This is certainly the case for Italy, as football returns after the awful pandemic that swept the globe starts to decline. Ansaldi: 'I want to play until 40'

Torino defender Cristian Ansaldi believes his performances develop with every season at the Granata and intends to ‘keep playing until I’m 40’.

The Argentine left-back initially arrived on a two-year loan in August 2017 but convinced the Granata to spend €2.5m to bring him on a permanent deal in July 2019.

His current contract with the Toro expires next summer and the veteran has claimed he wants to extend his stay at the Grande Torino.

Longo: 'Torino threw it away'

Moreno Longo insists he hasn’t had enough time to resolve the same old Torino problems after a 3-1 defeat to Sampdoria. “We can’t be exhausted after an hour.”

The Granata had taken the lead with Simone Verdi’s first goal for the club, but within nine minutes they had conceded three goals, including a Fabio Quagliarella penalty.

Official: Longo in for Mazzarri at Torino

Torino have officially parted ways with Walter Mazzarri and appointed Moreno Longo on a contract to the end of the 2019-20 season.

Longo is no stranger to Toro, having been a player here and also the successful coach of their youth team, winning the Scudetto and Coppa Italia at Primavera level.

Before accepting the role, Longo first had to terminate the contract still holding him to Frosinone, even though he was fired in December 2018.

The 43-year-old is from Turin and grew up in the Torino youth system, playing for them as a right-back from 1994-97.

Torino to fire Mazzarri

Torino have decided to sack Walter Mazzarri after a series of disastrous defeats, claim reports, culminating in a 4-0 loss to Lecce.

The situation had become increasingly untenable following three embarrassing results in the space of a week.

They were beaten 7-0 at home by Atalanta, fell 4-2 in extra time to Milan in the Coppa Italia midweek, then were swept aside 4-0 at the Stadio Via del Mare today.
