Di Francesco flourishing at Roma

As the Coach prepares to face his old club Sassuolo, Emmet Gates tracks Eusebio Di Francesco's tactical approach and transformation of Roma.

Even at this early stage of his tenure in the capital, Eusebio Di Francesco has exceeded all expectations. By mid-December, Roma were sitting on 38 points from 16 games, a feat achieved by only two men in Roma’s history: Rudi Garcia in 2013-14 and Fabio Capello in Roma’s title winning campaign of 2000-01.

Whilst it’s hard to envision Di Francesco emulating Capello and wrestling the title from Turin at this juncture, the man who lifted the Scudetto as a Roma player is constructing a team capable of doing so in future.

Roma-Napoli a tactical feast

Roma and Napoli both play 4-3-3, but a more detailed look shows that they have completely different styles, writes Vilizar Yakimov.

Two passionate crowds, two Scudetto rivals, two talented squads with two 4-3-3 formations. Roma and Napoli have so many things in common and when you add to all that their shared rivalry towards Juventus, the two teams seem almost identical.

The Giallorossi and the Partenopei will be locking horns against each other on Saturday in a clash between the only two teams that managed to launch a decent title challenge in recent years. But despite all similarities on the surface, are Maurizio Sarri and Eusebio Di Francesco’s sides really so alike?

Roma undervalued Salah and Rudiger

According to the Football Observatory, Roma undersold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool and Antonio Rudiger to Chelsea.

They used their algorithm to calculate the gap between amount paid and value estimated, which this season showed that inflation is accelerating in the transfer market.

Kylian Mbappé was easily the most over-paid player, as he cost €180m for Paris Saint-Germain, but the value of the Monaco player was objectively €92.6m.

What Roma need is Mahrez

Leicester City talent Riyad Mahrez would really light up Roma this season and make a transfer statement, writes Billy Wilkinson.

Alas, as everything with Roma seems to, this summer hasn’t worked out as planned. After Monchi’s now infamous ‘we are not a supermarket’ comment, Roma proceeded to sell two key players in Antonio Rudiger and Mohamed Salah. Of course, there are a number of reasons for these sales, but the point still remains that Roma lost two key players.
