Juventus should pursue Manolas

With an ageing backline, Juventus should target Roma’s Kostas Manolas to resolve the club’s crippled centre-back positions, writes Anthony Barbagallo.

Juventus fans were conscious of the Bianconeri’s midfield problems going into the 2018-19 campaign, but little did they know that their side’s defence would be so disjointed throughout the season. The Italian giant, priding itself on impeccable defending, has never looked so wounded in the backline, especially in the centre-back positions.

With a significant player overhaul expected for the Old Lady this summer, swooping in on Roma’s star centre-back Kostas Manolas could prove to be an intelligent reinforcement for Juve’s defensive crisis.

Lippi: Juve weren't 'lucky'

Marcello Lippi has claimed that Juventus’ Champions League exit was down to luck. “They didn’t have big players available...”

Lippi remains the last Juve Coach to win the Champions League after the Old Lady lost to Ajax in the quarter-finals, that success coming all the way back in 1996.

“Juve gave me my first great international satisfaction,” he told Rai Radio.

“The year before, we won the League and Coppa Italia. Then we won the Champions League and the following year we lifted the Intercontinental Cup.

Old Lady needs rejuvenating

Juventus have put all their focus on to Cristiano Ronaldo, neglecting the weak defence and midfield, argues Emmet Gates.

We’re fast approaching a quarter-century since Juventus last won the Champions League. The latest failure coming from a young, bold and at times a simply irrepressible Ajax side that thoroughly dominated The Old Lady over two legs. To put the wait into some sort of perspective, when Gianluca Vialli hoisted ‘Ol Big Ears high into the Roman sky in May 1996, five of the Ajax starting XI from the second leg weren’t even born.

Emre Can fears allayed

Emre Can should start Juventus’ Champions League quarter-final against Ajax on Tuesday, despite fears he had been left out of the squad.

Sport Mediaset initially reported that the Juve squad left their Vinovo training complex for Allianz Stadium without Can on their team bus to finish their preparation for the second leg.

However, the likes of Romeo Agresti and Gianni Balzarini – a journalist for the broadcaster – have since followed up that he only stayed behind to undergo personalised conditioning.

Big boys out of SPAL-Juve

Cristiano Ronaldo and Giorgio Chiellini are among the big names left out of Juventus’ squad to face SPAL on Saturday, but Juan Cuadrado returns.

Ronaldo is rested for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Ajax, despite Juve only needing a point to secure the Scudetto and SPAL giving him an opportunity to draw closer to Fabio Quagliarella and Krzysztof Piatek in the race to finish top goalscorer.
