'Italy lack alternatives in defence'

Ciro Ferrara and Daniele Adani believe Italy’s problems are focused on Juventus defenders, “but there are no alternatives.”

The Azzurri were beaten 3-1 by Belgium on Friday and host Romania in another friendly on Tuesday night.

“Tactically, technically and in terms of character, the defenders used by Antonio Conte are the most talented and reliable,” ex-Juventus centre-back Ferrara told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Juventus need penalty area improvement

Juventus were amongst the goals at Empoli last Sunday, but were far from convincing. Luca Cetta says the Bianconeri must improve in both penalty areas.

Massimo Maccarone’s strike must have brought back memories of Sassuolo. And the game against Empoli to that point followed a similar pattern: a sluggish opening punished by a goal. Juventus’ first half at Mapei Stadium was deemed ‘unacceptable’ by captain Gianluigi Buffon, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat. Where the matches differed is that last Sunday the Bianconeri managed to recover.

Chiellini: 'Juve can win Scudetto'

Giorgio Chiellini is confident “Juventus can still win a fifth consecutive Scudetto” and doubts Andrea Pirlo will join Inter.

The defender is on international duty for Italy’s friendlies against Belgium and Romania.

“I think this Italy squad has everything it takes to become great. The first two years with Cesare Prandelli were very positive thanks to a fine group.

“Unfortunately, some mistakes were made and with great regret the World Cup in 2014 was not up to standard.

‘Juve defenders an example’

Juventus’ contingent of Italy defenders are ‘points of reference for young players’, says Sampdoria’s Lorenzo De Silvestri.

The full-back praised Giorgio Chiellini, Gigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli during today’s Press conference, as well as the snubbed Andrea Pirlo.

Three-game ban for Borriello

Carpi striker Marco Borriello has received a three-game ban for attempting to headbutt Frosinone’s Danilo Soddimo.

Both players were given a red card during 2-1 win for the Canarini, but the former Roma man will miss three games for “attempting to hit an opposing player with a headbutt”, while Soddimo has only a one-match ban.

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini, Felipe Melo of Inter and Empoli’s Assane Diousse have each received a one-game ban for their respective red cards.

Juventus to return to 3-5-2?

Juventus look set to return to a 3-5-2 shape for the Derby d’Italia with Inter on Sunday evening.

The Bianconeri have been deploying a three-man defence during training at Vinovo in recent days, with just one session to go before the match.

Gigi Buffon will take his customary place in goal, with Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in defence.

The enforced absence of both Martin Caceres and Stephan Lichtsteiner is likely to mean Juan Caudrado starts at right wing-back, with Patrice Evra on the other side.

Rugani: 'Staying patient at Juventus'

Daniele Rugani is not concerned by a lack of playing time at Juventus - “I knew it wouldn’t be easy”.

The defender returned to the Bianconeri from Empoli this summer, but has so far been limited to just once substitute appearance in the Champions League.

“I haven’t played in Serie A, but I have to be calm,” Rugani told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’ve just started with Juve. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, I just have to be ready.

Chiellini: ‘Always with Conte’

Giorgio Chiellini says he “always” wants to have Italy CT Antonio Conte by his side.

The defender worked with the Coach at Juventus, and now with the national team, and praised the Azzurri boss ahead of the Norway game.

“I hope to always have the boss by my side,” Chiellini said in the pre-match Press conference.

“Maybe I don’t have a lot of playing still to do [at 31], but for at least the next three years, as long as I’m playing, I hope to always have him with me.”
