Chiellini: 'Good stuff starts now'

Giorgio Chiellini assures “the good stuff starts now” after Italy beat Spain 2-0 to set up a Euro 2016 quarter-final with Germany.

“We had a few things to prove and take revenge for. We deserved it and frankly made it too anxious in the final 15 minutes, as we should’ve finished it off a lot earlier. We wanted it more,” the defender told Rai Sport.

He found the net in the first half, then Graziano Pellè sealed the scoreline in stoppages.

The Juve connection in Paris

Italy’s stern defence could halt the Spanish attack, but does Alvaro Morata have a painful farewell to his Juventus teammates, asks George Rinaldi?

When Sergio Ramos strode up from 12 yards to confirm Spain’s topping of Group D, a huge sigh of relief was waiting in the wings from all Italians back at home.

Cue a save from Danijel Subasic, alongside a late strike from Inter’s Ivan Perisic, leaving Italy contemplating what could have been. But, unfortunately for both sides, they are the go-to game for the Round of 16.

“We must remain united in order to be dangerous,” ex-Juventus striker Morata told Deportes Cuatro.

“People have tried to create too much controversy, like the one on Gerard Pique, although that was even laughable.”

Dybala: 'Morata scared of Chiellini!'

Paulo Dybala reveals Alvaro Morata “was always scared of facing Giorgio Chiellini” in Juventus training ahead of Italy v Spain.

The two teammates are set to face off at Euro 2016 on Monday at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

“Italy looked good apart from the last game with the Republic of Ireland, when they had made many changes,” Juve star Dybala told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’ll be a great battle, as Spain play good football, so I hope it’ll be entertaining and with many goals.

Italy call the shots

Italy may not have been flashy against Sweden, writes Andrea Tallarita, but their system is brutally efficient.

Along with defending champions Spain, Italy are now the only team in Euro 2016 with six points and two clean sheets. It's an impressive result and Coach Antonio Conte deserves all the praise he's been getting for it. The good news is that things should only get easier from here onwards, as the opponents will get more and more technical, and thus more and more likely to fall for Italy's anti-possession system.
