Young Azzurri gearing up for 2020

Italy are on the cusp of Euro 2020 qualification, so Vijay Rahaman looks at the young players building towards a spot in the Azzurri squad.

While there are some established stars and those consistently in the squad, what new players could Roberto Mancini look to for the future? A few of them are already in the Nazionale squad facing Armenia this evening and Finland on Sunday, but the 2020 Serie A odds here point to them increasing their Azzurri profile.

Coppa: Mandragora double for Udinese

Udinese pushed Sudtirol aside 3-1 with a Rolando Mandragora brace to secure their spot in the Fourth Round of the Coppa Italia, where they will face Bologna.

It took quite a while for Igor Tudor’s men to get going against the Serie C outfit, as Mandragora and Ignacio Pussetto skimmed the woodwork, while Kevin Lasagna’s goal was ruled offside.

Lasagna did break the deadlock when running on to a Rodrigo De Paul through ball to beat the goalkeeper one-on-one in the second half.

Dortmund embarrass Udinese

Udinese were punished for some embarrassing defensive errors in their 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The Friulani have looked disjointed so far this summer under returning Coach Igor Tudor and continued the trend this evening.

Becao and Jens Stryger-Larsen both failed to clear the ball effectively, allowing a simple Thorgan Hazard tap-in from seven yards.

Mandragora dreams of Juve return

Udinese midfielder Rolando Mandragora is taking little notice of his €20m price tag and confirms returning to Juventus is ‘a primary objective’.

Udinese splashed out a club-record €20m to bring in Mandragora last summer, although Juve can buy the Italy Under-21 internaitonal back at a later date.

“I work every day to be an important player,” he told Corriere del Mezzogiorno.

“Right now, all my attention is focused on Udinese, who paid so much to sign me.

Azzurrini still offer hope for Italy

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall maintains Italy’s U21 future is bright, regardless of their defeat to Poland.

The Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna had been raucous and in the end infectious for the Azzurrini, as they came from behind to beat a good Spanish team by 3-1 in the first game of the Under-21 European Championship. As they stepped on to the same field to face Poland, they did it with the knowledge that their former opponents had beaten Belgium hours before. This meant that a win would see Italy go through to the next round, so could they do it with the same style?

Mandragora: 'It didn't go well'

Rolando Mandragora missed a sitter in Italy’s 1-0 European U21 Championship defeat to Poland. “Now we need to hope for the best.”

The Azzurrini had 31 attempts on goal and 64 per cent possession, but still lost 1-0 and their qualification for the semi-finals is now seriously in doubt.

Roma 'move for Mandragora'

Roma are reportedly considering making an offer for Udinese and Italy Under-21 midfielder Rolando Mandragora.

Roma have to replace Daniele De Rossi, who left the club after 18 years, and could sell Steven N’Zonzi, despite only signing the Frenchman for an initial €26.65m last summer.

Consequently, Tuttomercatoweb is tipping the Giallorossi to make a move for Mandragora.

The Azzurrini captain joined Udinese from Juventus for €20m a year ago after spells on loan at Pescara and Crotone.

Douglas Costa banned for four games

Juventus winger Douglas Costa has been given a four-match Serie A ban for his elbow, attempted headbutt and spit on Federico Di Francesco.

The Brazilian was sent off during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo at the Juventus Stadium.

He was caught on camera in a lengthy tussle with Di Francesco – the son of Roma Coach Eusebio Di Francesco – which included trying to lash out an elbow, then an attempted headbutt.

As the pair continued to argue off the ball, Douglas Costa spat at his opponent from point-blank range.
