Only in Serie A: Pioli's 90 days at Palermo

Maurizio Zamparini was legendary for going through coaches like candy, but he out-did himself when firing Stefano Pioli before the 2011-12 season even started...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

Stefano Pioli is surely the most under-appreciated coach working in Serie A. His longest tenure came at Bologna between 2011 and 2014, keeping the Rossoblu up in his two seasons. Since then, he led Lazio to the Champions League playoffs in 2015, stabilised Inter after the Frank de Boer debacle and saw Fiorentina through the death of their captain. He is having a similar effect on Milan, despite his position being publicly undermined. Palermo, however, didn’t even give him three games.

Capello: 'Who knows if Milan are right?'

Former Milan coach Fabio Capello claims ‘many clubs will suffer’ playing in empty stadiums when Serie A resumes and points out the current 'lack of continuity' at the Rossoneri.

Capello brought home four Scudetti during his time with the Diavolo, including the invincible season in 1991-92, and is not sure if his former employer are doing the right thing by planning to start again with only foreigners at the helm.

Van Bommel wants Milan job

There are reports former midfielder Mark van Bommel has put himself forward to become the new Milan coach.

The 43-year-old Dutchman is currently a free agent after his spell on the PSV Eindhoven bench came to an end in December 2019.

According to Calciomercato.it, Van Bommel and his entourage contacted Milan owners to put his name forward as a replacement for Stefano Pioli next season.

The first choice remains Ralf Rangnick, but CEO Ivan Gazidis is willing to listen to other candidates.

Ivan the Terrible strikes again

Ralf Rangnick may well be the right man for Milan, but Livio Caferoglu writes Ivan Gazidis has gone in completely the wrong way about hiring him.

Not even a global health emergency could mellow the madness at Milan. Only last summer, Elliott Management backed Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini to return the club to greatness. Less than 12 months on and the pair are about to be consigned to the Rossoneri’s history books for the second time. Instead, a man with no official connections to the red half of San Siro has been allowed to call the shots, seemingly without informing his colleagues at the club.

Giampaolo set for Torino job

Ex-Milan coach Marco Giampaolo is the hot favourite to take over at Torino from next season, as Moreno Longo won’t be confirmed on the bench.

According to Tuttosport, Giampaolo has agreed in principle to accept the job, although due to the Serie A rules, he cannot be signed to more than one club in a single season.

Having been fired by Milan on October 8 after just seven Serie A games, it means he’ll have to wait until 2020-21.

Report: Milan accommodate for Zlatan

Milan are allegedly prepared to make economical exceptions to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic at San Siro, but his final decision depends on the possible managerial changes at the club.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims CEO Ivan Gazidis is willing to make Zlatan exempt from the savings plan he wants at Milan, ensuring that the financial aspect of a contract extension will be doable for the Rossoneri.

The report claims the former Sweden international is closer to agreeing a new deal with the Diavolo, but the deal still depends on the future sporting project at San Siro.
