Pioli: 'Every game the most important'

Stefano Pioli has challenged his players to bring Milan “back to where they’ve always been” and continue to “improve our position” in Serie A.

The Rossoneri are playing Brescia on Friday night and are currently on a run of three consecutive wins.

The coach seems pleased with what he has been presented after the winter break, but is adamant that they must “treat every game as if it’s the most important” to help them climb further up the table.

Pioli: 'Rebic change of Milan pace'

Stefano Pioli explains why he thought Ante Rebic could change Milan against Udinese, while Theo Hernandez “can become one of the best in the world.”

The Rossoneri registered their third consecutive victory between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, but had to fight back repeatedly for a 3-2 win over Udinese with the last kick of the game.

“It would be wonderful if our season started today from this match,” said the coach in his press conference.

Milan back to basics

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at how Stefano Pioli has reinvigorated Milan by doing the simple things well.

Gheorghe Hagi once stated that the way to win was not all about having talent. He claimed that being organised and possessing the will to succeed was just as important as quality. Having a little bit of stardust on top of that obviously helps, but the basics done correctly are essential. Milan have been through a tumultuous time in recent years and tried many innovative ideas to get them out of it. Stefano Pioli has now come in to ‘steady the ship’ and after a stormy start, he perhaps can claim success by going back to the simplest of strategies.

Pioli targets Coppa Italia success

Pioli: 'Milan effective with Ibrahimovic'

Stefano Pioli acknowledges Milan are “more effective with Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a reference point” and hints Lucas Paqueta is surplus to requirements.

The Rossoneri had been without a win since December 8 and hadn’t even scored in over 370 minutes of football, but the move to 4-4-2 saw both Rafael Leao and Ibrahimovic on target in a 2-0 victory away to Cagliari.

Suso, Krzysztof Piatek and Paqueta were not only dropped, but never even warmed up at the Sardegna Arena.

Pioli explains Caldara exit

Milan coach Stefano Pioli says it was the club’s decision to move Mattia Caldara on after “technical and physical evaluations”.

Caldara is on his way back to Atalanta after a torrid time at Milan, which was ravaged by two serious injuries, and Pioli accepts the move simply has not worked out.

“Technical and physical evaluations were made. If we decided to make a change, it’s because we’re thinking about other solutions in his position,” the coach said at a press conference.

Pioli: 'Milan wrong moves for Ibra'

Stefano Pioli complained Milan showed “a lack of quality” and made the wrong passes to feed Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a “disappointing” draw with Sampdoria.

The game ended goalless at San Siro and was barely an improvement on the 5-0 defeat to Atalanta that closed off 2019.

“Clearly we wanted to win and resume with a victory, so the fact we didn’t manage that is certainly disappointing,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Ibrahimovic just what Milan need

The statistics from this season show just how desperately Milan needed a forward like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, claims Christopher Bland.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has completed a long-awaited return to Milan and could he be just the clinical striker Stefano Pioli’s side need? Given that one of their top scorers is full-back Theo Hernandez on four goals, and the other is struggling Krzysztof Piatek, who has seen three of his four come from the penalty spot, it is a gamble that Milan will be more than happy to take.
